For the majority of ‘The Boys’ fans, being in the same room with Homelander is a death sentence in waiting. The reason why the world is afraid of the most powerful supe is that he is unmatched in strength, has laser vision, and is willing to use both without any hesitation.
However, there is one man who can do something that feels almost impossible: put Homelander out of his comfort zone. That man is not a superhero, soldier, or even an opponent who possesses his powers. It is James Stillwell, a businessman, whose weapon is not power, but cold indifference.
Homelander Met One Man Who Wouldn’t Play His Game

When Homelander storms into Stillwell’s office with the intention of killing him and taking control of the United States, the situation should be simple. In the world of Homelander, threats tend to be resolved in a single manner, namely, by death. But Stillwell does not respond like Homelander wants.

Rather than panicking and pleading to spare his life, he orders security to stand down. Then he sits at his desk and speaks to Homelander as though he were talking to an irritating employee who has outstayed his welcome. There’s no fear in his voice, no urgency in his actions. If anything, he looks bored.
That response is in itself disarming. Homelander lives off fear and admiration; it is the basis of his power over people. In its absence, the dynamic is abruptly changed. The most dangerous man in the room is not running the conversation for once.
The Brutal Truth Homelander Couldn’t Handle

Stillwell does not simply refuse to be afraid of Homelander; he openly insults him. He downplays his violence as insignificant and puts all the actions of the supe as the tantrums of a spoiled child with excessive power. Homelander is not a godlike being in Stillwell’s eyes. He is a flawed product that has gotten out of corporate control.

The tension is at its highest point when Homelander threatens to tear him apart. This is the place where individuals tend to shatter. Stillwell doesn’t. Rather, he literally asks Homelander to go ahead since he is fed up with his nonsense. It is not heroic bravery; it is colder. Stillwell simply refuses to play the role Homelander expects. And that refusal shakes him.
Homelander hesitates even though he is used to killing without any hesitation. The absence of fear deprives him of the emotional reward he expected. Rather than killing Stillwell, he throws a temper and storms away. It is a rare occasion when the biggest weakness of Homelander is revealed: the world’s most powerful man still desperately needs validation. And when someone denies it to him completely, even he doesn’t know how to respond.
