Season 4 of ‘The Lincoln Lawyer‘ dropped on Netflix and threw Mickey Haller into the biggest fight of his life, proving he didn’t commit murder.
But fans quickly noticed something just as important: Andy Freeman was gone. The prosecutor who became Mickey’s love interest didn’t appear at all, and even the actress playing her didn’t expect that disappearance.
The Storyline That Removed Andy Freeman From ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’

Yaya DaCosta played prosecutor Andrea “Andy” Freeman in seasons 2 and 3. At first, she stood opposite Mickey in court as one of his toughest opponents. Over time, however, their rivalry became personal and eventually romantic. DaCosta once explained that Andy entered law to serve justice, not fame, and she cared more about truth winning than attention or reputation.

Because the characters worked so well together, the writers expanded her role beyond the books. Showrunner Ted Humphrey confirmed Andrea wasn’t originally part of the novel’s storyline, yet the team kept writing her in because the chemistry felt natural. By season 3, the relationship added emotional tension, especially since Andy was also friends with Mickey’s ex-wife, Maggie McPherson.
Season 4, however, follows ‘The Law of Innocence‘. This story centers almost entirely on Mickey defending himself after being framed for murder. As a result, the narrative had little space for romance. Instead, Maggie returned in a bigger role, and Andy no longer fit into the main plot, which ultimately explains her disappearance.
Could Yaya DaCosta Come Back?

When the official cast list came out, DaCosta’s name was missing. Then the season premiered and only referenced Andy briefly without showing her on screen, which confirmed the character had been written out for now. DaCosta later admitted the decision surprised her as well. She said Andrea’s absence wasn’t expected or clearly explained to viewers. Sometimes shows include a short line of dialogue to explain a missing character, but she didn’t know if that would happen here.

For now, she said she is focusing on her current and future projects rather than guessing about the writers’ plans. After the premiere, Humphrey explained the creative reason. A streaming season only runs about ten episodes, so the writers had to stay centered on Mickey’s criminal case. A longer network season could allow more side stories, but this one couldn’t. Therefore, the change wasn’t caused by behind-the-scenes problems; the story simply didn’t have room for her.
Even so, the exit does not seem permanent. Humphrey said the show treats its cast as a group of characters who can come and go. He also described Andrea as a valuable character they would like to use again.
