‘The Boys Presents: Diabolical,’ which debuted in 2022, was an immediate continuation of the chaotic universe of ‘The Boys’. The animated series took the same approach as the franchise with outrageous violence, dark humor, and bizarre superhero situations.
It gave fans something new when the main series was on hiatus. However, following several years of silence regarding a possible continuation, most fans thought the spinoff had been canceled quietly. Now, Simon Racioppa, the showrunner, has finally sorted out the confusion, and the truth is very simple.
‘Diabolical’ Was Always Meant To Be A One-Time Experiment

According to Simo Racioppa, ‘The Boys: Diabolical’ was never intended to be a spinoff. It was a one-off project. The animated collection came at a strange time for the franchise. The global effect of COVID-19 had interfered with production on the main series. So, fans had to wait longer than anticipated to see new episodes.

To bridge that gap, the creative team hastened to create ‘Diabolical’ as a short collection in the same universe. “We did it in 10 months, just basically as something to give the fans something to watch because the main series was delayed because of the pandemic, and nobody knew what was happening,” he told Polygon.
The show was not aimed at starting another long-running series but merely to provide the audience with a new opportunity to dive into the twisted world of Vought when the main show couldn’t. The series was experimental and unpredictable as each episode had a different animation style and creative voice.
That style also implied that the show was best suited as a collection of stories as opposed to a continuity. Nonetheless, it was mostly well-received. The anthology received acclaim due to its creativity and wildness, allowing the series to receive positive reviews and reminding viewers of the flexibility of the ‘The Boys’ universe.
‘The Boys’ Universe Is Still Expanding

Although ‘Diabolical’ might not be coming back, the bigger franchise is not slowing down. As a matter of fact, the world created around Homelander, Billy Butcher, and the other characters is still expanding in several directions. The live-action spinoff ‘Gen V’ has already demonstrated that people are willing to explore new areas of this universe, and more projects are coming.

Among them is ‘Vought Rising’, a prequel that will cover the early years of Vought and focus on Soldier Boy and Stormfront. Another international spinoff is also in the process of development, which proves that the franchise has a lot of stories to share. In the meantime, the main series itself is moving toward its bombastic climax. The last season is set to take the conflict between Butcher and Homelander to its limit.
So while ‘Diabolical’ was intended to be a short experiment, it fulfilled its role. It provided fans with something new in a challenging production season and demonstrated that the universe of ‘The Boys’ can succeed in a wide variety of forms.
