The True Story Behind Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Special Ops: Lioness’

In Short
  • 'Special Ops: Lioness' is inspired by the real Marine Corps program Task Force Lioness, created during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
  • The teams, consisting of female Marines, were formed to search women at checkpoints due to cultural restrictions on male soldiers.
  • The show also draws influence from another source in Afghanistan, which provided security and support while gathering intelligence from local women.

Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Special Ops: Lioness‘ is about a female Marine Raider who gets pulled into a secret CIA mission that has nothing to do with traditional combat. Her job is to get close to the daughter of a powerful terrorist, earn her trust, and help stop a massive attack before it happens.

But all these layers in the story make the viewers very curious. And it naturally leads to curiosity about how much of ‘Lioness‘ comes from real events and how much is pure TV drama. The answer sits somewhere in between, and the real story behind it is actually very interesting.

The Real Story Behind ‘Special Ops: Lioness’

Special Ops: Lioness‘ is inspired by the real Marine Corps program Task Force Lioness, which was created during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Back then, U.S. troops ran into a serious problem. Cultural rules did not allow male soldiers to search local women, especially at checkpoints.

Terrorist groups quickly took advantage of that rule. Women were used to carry weapons or explosives, and sometimes men dressed as women slipped through security. The Marine Corps responded by creating teams of female Marines who could search women and talk to them directly. These teams became known as Task Force Lioness, and they played a major role on the ground.

Task Force Lioness teams worked mainly at checkpoints, which were some of the most dangerous spots for U.S. troops. Each team usually had two women. One carried out the search, while the other stood guard. Reports show these teams often searched 90 to 100 women in a single day. Those searches turned up weapons, large amounts of cash, anti-American material, and photos of military sites.

Another Major Inspiration Behind The Story’s Origin

Another real influence behind ‘Lioness‘ comes from Female Engagement Teams, often called FETs, especially in Afghanistan. These teams did more than security work. They handed out school supplies and hygiene kits and sometimes helped run basic medical clinics for women. Gathering information was also part of their job.

Female soldiers entered homes with translators and spoke directly to women whose family members were under suspicion. These talks often felt friendly and supportive, but they also helped reveal useful details about insurgent activity. Taylor Sheridan takes this real idea and pushes it further for television. The show places its main character deep inside a terrorist’s family, which goes beyond what actually happened.

Even so, the emotional pressure feels real. Building trust while hiding dangerous intentions reflects what many women in these programs experienced. ‘Special Ops: Lioness‘ raises the danger level for drama, but its base stays the same.
