In ‘The Wheel of Time’, the One Power is the ultimate force that shapes reality and changes the course of history. Not everyone is fortunate to have this kind of magic, and those who do have to follow rules, or the corruption of power dooms them. This is where the formidable network of the Aes Sedai comes in. This influential organization of women lives and trains at the White Tower in the city of Tar Valon. Yet, the Aes Sedai aren’t a monolithic group. They don robes of different colors, which signify their distinct Ajahs. There are seven of these factions, each with a unique purpose and mission. Here are the secrets unravelled.

The Blue Ajah is involved in information gathering and uncovering secrets. Think of them as mysterious agents of the Aes Sedai, who arm themselves with knowledge to protect the world from collapse. Read: Dark Forces. Moiraine Sedai belongs to this group. She is constantly on the move, tracking down the Dragon Reborn or confronting dangerous elements. The fight for keeping the balance and peace in the world is relentless, and the Blue Ajah are vital for their intelligence and prowess with hidden truths.

Possibly the most feared and ferocious of all the Aes Sedai is the Red Ajah. They are tasked with hunting down undesirable wielders of the One Power. This means that male channellers can go mad with power. So, members of the Red Ajah find these men and “gentle” them, i.e., take away their ability to tap into One Power. The Reds are notorious for hating men and don’t even have Warders for protection. They see men with magic as a grave threat to the world and ruthlessly pursue their cause.

Green Ajah

The Green Ajah is known as the “Battle Ajah.” They are the ones with hardened combat skills. The Greens are prepared for war, but their goal is to be ready when the Last Battle approaches, the one that will decide whether Light or Shadow remains in the world. The Green Ajah also bonds with multiple Warders who fight alongside them on the front lines. They are above power dynamics and have the utmost courage while facing the dark forces.

Yellow Ajah

The Aes Sedai also has great healers, and they form the Yellow Ajah. They study herbs and medicines and use an infusion of One Power to perfect the art of mending injuries, curing diseases, and restoring life. They might work behind the scenes, but Yellow Ajah makes up a much-needed compassionate side of the White Tower.

Think of Gray Ajah as the zone where diplomacy and politics meet. These women of the Aes Sedai are the peacemakers. Without them, the conflicts and fractured alliances would consume the world. The Grays know how to negotiate, mediate and bring stability in the toughest circumstances. Their decision-making skills can start and end wars. Thankfully, they choose peace and squash chaos.

The Brown Ajah is the one for preserving knowledge. These intellectual women become scholars, archivists, and guardians of ancient texts. They spend their lives studying history at the White Tower, uncovering lore that has been forgotten with the passage of time, and ensuring the progression of humanity’s collective wisdom. The Brown Sisters might not be for politics and war, but their life’s work is for the future generations. If the past slips into oblivion, mistakes will be repeated, and humanity will be doomed. Yes, history matters!

White Ajah

The White Ajah is the one the rest of the Aes Sedai can trust with logic, philosophy, and reason. These sisters dedicate their lives to chasing the truth through mind games and analysis. In their aims, the Whites keep emotions at bay and go for rational thought full throttle, free of bias or personal passions. Hence, they become philosophers and never stop questioning the nature of the universe and our place within it.

Now, the Black Ajah is not an official faction marketed by the White Tower. In fact, it’s their dirty secret. This shadowy faction of the Aes Sedai constitute women who have turned to the Dark One and are betraying everything they learnt at the White Tower, including their sacred Oaths. They are the dangerous force that can undo the greater good. Liandrin, the fierce Red Ajah, is revealed to be a Black Ajah Sister in the series. Once their loyalties switch, they no longer bind with other Aes Sedai. They become adept in lying, manipulating, and using the One Power without restrictions.
