Almost a decade after its first season, ‘The Night Manager‘ is returning with a second chapter. As we already know, Jonathan Pine’s story in the first season was based on a John le Carré novel, but the trickiest part is that he never wrote a second part for it.
Since the novel ended with Season 1, the makers had to decide how Jonathan Pine’s story could continue without another book to guide them. While John le Carré once shared early thoughts on a possible continuation, the upcoming season takes a different approach.
Why John le Carré’s ‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 Plot Was Dropped

Unlike Season 1, the upcoming second season of ‘The Night Manager‘ is not inspired by any story written by John le Carré. While the first season was adapted directly from his novel, Season 2 follows a completely new story.

This change happened because le Carré never wrote a second book. Although he once shared early thoughts on how Jonathan Pine’s story could continue, those ideas were never fully developed. Because of this, the makers decided not to use them and instead created an original plot for the new season.
Jonathan Pine Returns In Season 2 With A New Storyline

After the huge success of Season 1, the talk of a second season followed. However, since the novel ended with Season 1, there was no remaining material to adapt. Reports later confirmed that Season 2 would not be based on any existing or unused work by le Carré.

Hiddleston shared that returning to the role felt exciting because the story doesn’t rely on what was done before. He said the new season feels original while still being a part of the story already established in Season 1.
In Season 2, Jonathan Pine returns as the former MI6 soldier and goes undercover once again, this time in Colombia. In the new storyline, Pine becomes involved with a criminal group that supports a guerrilla organization. While the location and mission are different, the focus remains on Pine and the choices he makes.
By setting aside John le Carré’s unused Season 2 ideas, ‘The Night Manager‘ has chosen to move forward on its own terms. And, we’re very excited!
