The ‘Blue Bloods‘ world has already changed a lot since the Reagan family said goodbye. And now, with ‘Boston Blue‘ carrying the franchise forward, fans have been hoping for any sign of Frank Reagan’s (Tom Selleck) return.
Tom Selleck has finally spoken out and shared new insight into where Frank fits into the expanding storyline. But instead of clearing things up, his response puts the future of the Reagan family on shaky ground.
Tom Selleck Speaks About Possible ‘Blue Bloods’ Return

In a recent interview, Selleck began by looking back on the end of ‘Blue Bloods‘, explaining that the cancellation still made no sense to him. He reminded fans that the series stayed one of the highest-rated shows and would have ranked sixth on broadcast TV. Because of that, he admitted he still didn’t understand why CBS pulled the plug.

Selleck also talked about the strong bond within the Reagan cast. He said that everyone worked well together and genuinely liked each other, which he felt was rare in the television industry. Selleck even shared a moment from after filming the finale, when he accidentally prepared lines for “Monday,” forgetting the show had wrapped. He had said earlier that the cancellation frustrated him because the show was always taken for granted despite its success.
‘Boston Blue‘ has already brought back familiar faces, such as Marisa Ramirez and Bridget Moynahan. Donnie Wahlberg, the new series lead, said he spoke to Selleck about joining the spinoff and described him as very supportive, though he didn’t share details. All of this built up hope that Frank Reagan might still appear someday.
Selleck On Frank Reagan’s Future In ‘Boston Blue’

When asked if he’d appear on ‘Boston Blue‘, Selleck surprised everyone. He said he didn’t know if he would do it and explained that the spinoff felt like “another show,” not a natural continuation of Frank’s storyline. He added that he saw it as his job to help protect ‘Blue Bloods’ legacy, but not necessarily to keep playing Frank forever.

Still, he didn’t rule it out. He said he couldn’t predict the future and also mentioned that he hoped to explore comedy again, after having success with projects like ‘Friends‘ and ‘Three Men and a Baby‘. His comments made it clear he isn’t rushing back into the Reagan world, even though the door isn’t fully shut. He also reiterated that the cancellation felt like a “huge disappointment.” In fact, he still didn’t know why CBS ended a show that continued to perform so well.
Selleck’s comments change the expectations around ‘Boston Blue‘. Wahlberg has already expressed his desire for a crossover and noted that New York and Boston are close enough. He added that he hoped the writers could create a storyline strong enough to pull Selleck back in when the time is right. Meanwhile, ‘Boston Blue‘ has already started building its own version of the Reagan family, with Mika Amonsen taking over the role of Sean Reagan.
Frank Reagan’s return could still happen, but after Selleck’s latest comments, we might need to wait until he feels comfortable with the story.
