‘The Wheel of Time’ May Be Dead At Amazon But The Franchise Is Coming Back With Big New Projects

In Short
  • Amazon Prime Video's adaptation of 'The Wheel of Time' was canceled after three seasons.
  • New developments suggest the franchise may continue with fresh adaptations.
  • The rights have changed hands, allowing iwot Productions to explore new projects that aim to provide a more faithful adaptation of Robert Jordan's work.

Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s epic, ‘The Wheel of Time‘, concluded after three seasons in May 2025. The series, starring Rosamund Pike, received strong reviews for its final chapter, but high production costs ultimately sealed its fate.

However, despite this bittersweet turn, there is an exciting new update for fantasy fans. Recent reports suggest fresh developments, hinting that the franchise might continue in a new form.

Why Amazon Pulled the Plug on ‘The Wheel of Time’

Industry reports highlight financial expenses as the main issue. The cost of producing the show was significantly higher than what it earned in today’s tough streaming market.

Even though its final season performed well in many countries and received Emmy attention, it did not reach the global numbers needed to cover its costs, unlike big hits like ‘The Rings of Power.’

This reflects an ongoing trend in the industry, where shows are often cancelled when they fail to attract strong streaming numbers.

As far as Amazon Prime Video is concerned, the platform is supporting ‘The Wheel of Time‘ for the Emmys but is not looking to continue the series or move it to another streaming platform.

The IP owners at the iwot Productions (formerly Red Eagle) are still keeping the story alive. The rights have now changed hands, allowing new projects to move forward. Besides, recent developments suggest new partnerships, including one with Arcane producer Thomas Vu, to create an animated series, movie, or possibly even a video game.

These projects aim to continue the story in many ways. The animated version is expected to reach a wider audience, possibly the young viewers, while maintaining a high standard of content.

Animation solves many of the problems of the live-action shows. There are no concerns about aging actors or expensive shooting locations. Most importantly, it gives the creators more freedom to depict big moments like The One, Trollocs, The Blight, and major battles like Tarmon Gai’don.

Fans have long awaited a faithful and complete adaptation, and animation could finally give creators the freedom to stay true to Robert Jordan’s detailed work.

Beyond animations, iwot Studios is also working on a big open-world RPG for PC and consoles, along with more mobile and PC games to reach wider players. Prequel films such as ‘Age of Legends‘ and other animated films are also being planned.

While Prime Video now moves ahead on to new fantasy projects like ‘Fourth Wing‘, these different iwot projects show hope for a more faithful version of the story.
