The second season was the last time that Revenge unfurled the flag as the beloved queer rom-com, ‘Our Flag Means Death’, stood cancelled at HBO Max after two seasons. After debuting in March 2022, the second season was renewed, and it was released in October 2023. The series is the latest addition to a plethora of fan-favorite and niche series getting cancelled on streaming platforms.
‘Our Flag Means Death’ was reportedly based on the misadventures of the 18th-century pirate Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby. After the tearful ending of the first season, Stede realizes that his real home is the sea and that the family he belongs to is that of The Revenge. He also realizes his love for Edward. The end of the second season saw the death of Izzy, but the season ended on a good note, only for it to be the ending of the series in its entirety.

‘Our Flag Means Death’ Will Not Return For A Third Season
The second season of ‘Our Flag Means Death’ premiered on Max in October 2023. In the new season, after parting ways from the gang, Edward, Stede Bonnet, goes in search of them, as he wants to confess his feelings to Edward and apologize to him.
As the series progressed, Stede and Ed came inch closer to meeting, and it finally happened in the season finale, but at the cost of Izzy’s death.
The season finale of the second season would be the finale for the entire series, which was not expected by the fans. ‘Our Flag Means Death’ is now canceled after only two seasons. In a statement, a Max spokesperson announced the cancellation of the Taika Waititi-starrer.
The statement read, “While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life.
In conclusion, the spokesperson thanked the fans for their unwavering support for the queer rom-com. “We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.” However, fans are angry at the decision.

Fans Express Disappointment Over The Series’ Cancellation
David Jenkins served as one of the creators of ‘Our Flag Means Death’. During an interview after the finale of the second season, he teased a potential third season, which will serve as the last installment of the series.
David Jenkins said, “I love things in threes. That first act, second act, third act structure is so satisfying when it is done well, and you don’t overstay your welcome.”
He continued, “I think this world of the show is a big world, and if the third season is successful, we could go on in a different way. But I think for the story of Stede and Ed, that is a three-season story.” The cancellation decision has enraged the fans.
Devastating. This show was so successful and so good. And it was life changing for so many people. #RenewAsACrew

Disappointing news for sure; 'Our Flag Means Death' had a unique blend of humor and heart, demonstrating Waititi's signature style. Let's hope another network recognizes its potential and gives it a second chance.

heartbroken about Our Flag Means Death being canceled
that show means so much to me and a third and final season for it to tell the whole story would have been amazing
I’m glad s2 doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but it deserved to end on its own term #ofmd pic.twitter.com/Hmd5GvBRKU— Morgane (@miuxo) January 9, 2024
