Animes generally follow the plot and turn of events that the manga of the series denotes. These manga are the building blocks of most anime and the animes follow their story. However, there are some cases where the anime does not follow the manga for various reasons. It simply could be that the plot deviated from the middle, or that the manga’s ending was not satisfactory.
Another reason is that the anime caught up to the manga and the manga wasn’t updated. Fans are curious about the anime whose endings differed from their mangas. Here are the top 10 anime with different endings than their manga.

10) Neon Genesis Evangelion
‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ is an oddity in the anime world. It is one of those few instances where the order gets reversed. The anime was released before the manga even started. It was after the anime started airing that the manga began adapting. The ending of the anime had divided opinions, some fans found it fitting with the anime’s themes whilst others found it abrupt. The manga, however, changed the ending from that of the anime.
9) Elfen Lied
The anime only covered a part of the manga. The story starts showing minor differences from the start, for instance, the hair colors of the Diclonii. In the manga, only Lucy had pink hair, but in the anime, all the Diclonii had pink hair color. The ending of the anime was very different as only parts of the plot were covered. This is why it is one of the anime with different endings.
8) Hellsing
‘Hellsing’ is the perfect example of an anime that started when the manga wasn’t much further ahead. The anime gradually caught up to the manga and the ending of course had to be changed. The manga ended after the series ended and they both had different endings. This, however, was resolved when ‘Hellsing: Ultimate’ was released. This series followed the events of the manga properly.
7) Claymore
‘Claymore’ is similar to ‘Hellsing’ in terms of its manga adaptation. One arc of the manga was properly followed by the anime. The changes in the story were also quite good, up until the very end. The end fight between the main character and the antagonists was seen as unsatisfactory by many fans. Instead of a struggle or even a well-explained easy fight, the end fight was quite rushed. This is why it is one of the anime with a different ending than the manga.
6) Fruits Basket
‘Fruits Basket’ is one of the most popular romance anime of all time. The anime was based on a manga of the same name, but certain things were changed in the series. The ending was the major change. The anime ended with Tohru and Kyo ending up together, but in the manga, they were both shown in their old age. There were more plot points and characters in the manga as well.
5) Soul Eater
The ‘Soul Eater’ anime was a very big disappointment to the fans. The manga itself is amazing and has a lot of potential, but according to most fans, the anime got progressively worse. The anime changed the ends and even the sides that the characters took. The plot was rushed and had some loopholes which bothered the fans. They always recommend reading the manga rather than watching the anime when it comes to ‘Soul Eater’.
4) Shaman King
‘Shaman King’ was pretty much similar to the manga up until the very end. In the manga as well as the anime, Hao ends up becoming the shaman King. However, in the manga, the heroes around him convince him to give the world another chance. In the anime, however, Hao is considered too big a threat and the heroes eliminate him. This is why it is one of the anime with endings different from the manga.
3) Death Note
‘Death Note’ is one of the most popular anime of all time. The manga and anime have the same plot except for one difference in the end. This difference may not seem big, but it is significant. In the anime, Ryuk writes Light’s name in his death note after he is shot. In the manga, Ryuk is the one responsible for Light’s death and not a bullet. This is why it is one of the anime with different endings than the manga.
2) Tokyo Ghoul
‘Tokyo Ghoul’ is another one of those anime that completely derailed from their manga. Whilst it was similar to the manga in the start, from the second season onwards, the anime changed its storyline. The manga and the anime have very different plots and as a result, have entirely different ends. Fans were quite disappointed with the way ‘Tokyo Ghoul’ progressed and liked the manga better.
1) Fullmetal Alchemist
‘Fullmetal Alchemist’ went completely different from its manga in the early episodes itself. The fans were truly shocked and very disappointed with the way the series continued. This mistake however was rectified when ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’ was released. That anime followed the plot of the manga much better than its counterpart.
