Japan is known for making some of the best anime films in history. Some very popular films such as ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Princess Mononoke’ and more have a special place in the hearts of the viewers. These films are quite old and are still classics. However, there is one animator, Makoto Shinkai whose films have become very popular.
He recently released a film called ‘Suzume’. The film was released in Japan in 2022 and recently was released in China. It has broken many records in China. Read to find out.

What Is ‘Suzume’?
‘Suzume’ is the seventh film that Makoto Shinkai has ever released. His other works include, ‘Weathering with you’, ‘Your name’, ‘The Garden of Words’ and more. Most of his films have gained a lot of viewership not only in Japan but all around the world. ‘Your name’ in particular was very well received around the globe. His recent film ‘Suzume’ was released in Japan in 2022 and is set to release in the states in April 2023.
The movie was recently released at the Chinese box office. ‘Suzume’ follows the story of a girl named Suzune who tries to save her country from disasters. One day she dreams of finding her mother and the next morning when she heads out for school, she finds a mysterious man. She tells the strange man about a nearby onsen and follows him there. There she finds a door from which starlight is emerging.
After that, she reaches her school and after some time sees smoke rising from where the onsen is. She goes there and finds the same man there trying to close the door she saw in the morning. Suzume helps him and he tells her that it is his job to close these doors all around Japan to prevent calamity from striking. She and the strange man then try to save Japan.
The Movie Wreaks Havoc At The Chinese Box Office
The movie earned $50 million over the weekend when it was released in China. This is the biggest and highest earning for non-Chinese production. Many people believe that Anime’s viewership and influence are increasing in China and they believe it is because superheroes are fizzling out.
The movie is estimated to earn over $90 million and it could very well earn more than that. It would be the biggest animated movie ever in China and its viewership is not dwindling. The movie is said to be the biggest opening of Shinkai’s career in China. ‘Your name’ earned a total of $83.7 million and this release is estimated to cross that amount. This release is also monumental for other Japanese animators as it opens doors for them in China.
