The Duffer brothers are developing a new live-action Death Note series, according to a statement released by Netflix on July 6, 2022. The science fiction horror series ‘Stranger Things’ was created by Matt and Ross Duffer, who are well known for their work.
According to a press release from the streaming platform, the Duffer brothers will offer a “new perspective” on the Netflix live-action Death Note movie, which starred Willem Dafoe as Ryuk and Nat Wolff as Light Turner (a setting-influenced localization change from Yagami). The movie has received a mixed response from viewers and critics.

What Is So Special AboutThe Anime ‘Death Note’?
The manga series ‘Death Note‘ was first released as individual chapters in magazines from 2003 to 2006, and then all of the chapters were compiled and published as a twelve-part series. After that, the series quickly gained popularity, and a year later, it was adapted into an anime series.
The plot goes something like this, Light Yagami, a brilliant young man who despises crime and corruption, is incredibly clever. In the year 2003, a mysterious notebook known as the “Death Note” that he finds on the ground causes a significant change in his life. According to the directions for the Death Note, if a human’s name is written inside of it, that individual will pass away.
Light first has his reservations about the authenticity of the Death Note, but after experimenting with it, Light starts to believe it. Light wants to become “the God” by passing judgment on anyone who is evil or who stands in his way after meeting the Shinigami by the name of Ryuk who once owned the Death Note.
How Will New Live-Action Series Be Different From Previous Adaptations?
There have been many live-action ‘Death Note’ adaptations produced in Japan since 2006, thus this is not the first. In 2017, Adam Wingard, who also oversaw the Godzilla vs. King Kong live-action adaptation, attempted another adaption for Netflix.
In the adaption, which switched the location from Japan to Seattle, Washington, Nat Wolff played Light Turner, Lakeith Stanfield played L, and Willem Defoe played Ryuk (Jason Liles played the character in costume). According to Rotten Tomatoes, the American adaptation garnered a poor critics’ score of 37%.
It’s advisable to disregard the 2017 film. Not simply because of the negative reviews, the movie received upon release, but also because Death Note should be told serialized throughout a long season than try to fit everything into two hours.
After all, the popular 37-episode anime Death Note was once created as a 12-volume manga about how the main character Light uses the titular Death Note—a notebook that kills anyone whose name is inscribed on its pages—to murder others and get away with it. The Duffer brothers made a really wise decision as a TV series is an ideal structure for a story with a lot of world-building, many story arcs, characters, and surprises.
