Who Are Tengen Uzui’s Wives In ‘Demon Slayer’?

Tengen Uzui was one of the most intriguing characters who was introduced in the Entertainment District arc of ‘Demon Slayer‘. Also known as the Sound Hashira, his over-the-top personality along with his unique fighting style makes him stand out from the rest of the Hashira’s in the anime.

However, what really interested fans in his character is his marriage status as he is not just married to one woman, but instead three. This raises many questions on what led Tengen to take three wives. So who exactly are his three wives, and why does he practice polygamy in the first place?

Polygamy is very much a traditional practice in the Shinobi clan Tengen hails from. In such clans, which are located in remote areas, the head of the family would select three women suitable for their sons to marry at only the age of 15.

However, in Tengen’s case, one of his wives, Suma, first approached him instead of being chosen by his clan. Nevertheless, Tengen still grew up normalized to the practice and tradition of polygamy followed by his Shinobi family, which explains why he has three wives and is completely normal about it.

Tengen’s wives are named Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru. Their beauty mind distracts from the fact that they are formidable Kunoichi or female ninja warriors. During their battle against the demons Daki and Gyutaro in the Entertainment District, the three of them displayed mastery of fighting styles and weaponry skills as well. While not much is known about their individual backstories and personalities, they clearly have a bond and affection towards Tengen, which is not found in normal polygamy relationships.

While polygamy was an accepted practice in Tengen’s clan, he actively goes against the norms and expectations in the course of the arc. Unlike the usual view of women as inferior, Tengen provides the utmost care and respect to all three of his wives and sees them as equals and parts of what makes him strong.

During his battles, he prioritizes the lives of his wives over the mission itself, showing his affection. Similarly, Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru are powerful fighters in their own right who contribute greatly and are not mere sidekicks dumbed down to domestic duties.

Tengen’s unconventional family structure is both the culmination of his Shinobi clan’s traditions as well as his own progressive outlook. He sees his three wives Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru as equals rather than people below him. Their dynamic continues to interest and intrigue Demon Slayer fans worldwide.
