Another prominent character in Haikyuu!! is Kageyama. He was initially presented when Hinata’s junior high squad competed against him in the first episode. He plays the setter position for the volleyball team, and he’s smart. He is a genius in volleyball overall, in addition to being talented and diligent. He excels in the setter position.

Because of this, he is both admirable and terrifying. Kageyama is also obstinate and hard-headed. Although he is very respectful of his seniors, his stubbornness gives the impression that he is unkind and disrespectful, which is untrue. He rarely interacts with many people and is generally uninterested in pursuits other than volleyball.

In the beginning, Kageyama and Hinata did not get along. They used to fight and bicker and Kageyama refused to toss to Hinata. They however worked through their problems and gained trust in each other. The duo that could barely be in the same room without murdering each other became the secret weapon of the Karasuno volleyball team.

Why Is He Called A Genius?

Kageyama is termed a genius by everyone who sees him play. Oikawa in particular seems very sure of this fact. He deems Kageyama a genius and believes he will surpass him one day. To some extent, Oikawa is correct in his deduction. Not only Oikawa, every setter that sees Kageyama’s tosses, deems him a genius. It’s Kageyama’s learning speed and precision makes him such an amazing setter. He picks up concepts frighteningly fast and he works hard on those concepts until he perfects them.

He picked up Oikawa’s jump serve in under a year by just watching him do it. Oikawa himself spent years practicing and perfecting that serve. Kageyama is not at Oikawa’s level, but it is still a big feat. What makes Kageyama a supposed genius is his room for growth and his potential. Even after years and years of practice, some players can evolve to a certain extent. Kageyama however, has a huge potential and maximum space for growth.

When Akashi, the setter from Fukurodani saw Kageyama doing the falling toss, he mentioned to his teammate that it would be impossible for Akaashi to perform at his skill level. Making a set fall at a particular space with such precision is amazing and it is something not every setter can do. Miya Atsumu, the Inarizaki setter, calls Kageyama a goody-two-shoes but even he acknowledges his amazing skills as a setter and as a whole in volleyball.

Kageyama is also so strong because he is good at every aspect of the game. He can serve, receive and spike better than an average player. His predisposition however lies in being a setter. His flexibility when it comes to volleyball is another reason why he is called a genius.
