Jo Koy Says He Would “Love To” Host The Golden Globes Again “With 5 Months, Not 9 Days” To Prep

The Golden Globes awards concluded on Sunday but left behind a trail of issues for the audience to discuss. The awards host Jo Koy, who stepped in with just 10 days’ notice, received mixed reactions to the comedy he brought to the stage.

Many discarded Koy’s humor as inappropriate as he made comments about several great celebrities including Taylor Swift, and Robert De Niro, as well as superhit movies like ‘Barbie‘ and ‘Oppenheimer‘. Not just Hollywood stars, but many social media users from across the globe scrutinized Koy for his humor. But Koy has not given up his spirit, as he has stated that he is ready to embrace the challenge again next year.

Despite facing criticism, Koy has seemingly remained unfazed though he agreed that it was a “tough room” and that his humor may have fallen flat because of his miscalculations.  But he has not given lost his spirit. The comedian has said that he is willing to host the event again next year, this time with more preparation.

Koy’s monologue was full of jabs at several celebrities and only a few of them landed well. Despite the quick turnaround and a mixed reception to his monologue, Koy told People that he would “love to” host the show again, but with “five months, not nine days” to prepare.

The comedian took up the responsibility of hosting the awards function after Jerrod Carmichael. Speaking to People, he said that the last-minute gig did not give him much time to prepare. “Some [jokes] I wrote, some other people wrote,” Koy joked during the show.

Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago. You want a perfect monologue? Shut up. You’re kidding me, right? I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.” Appreciating the opportunity he got, Koy said that the best part was “just walking out there [on stage] for the first time”. “I was like, let’s just do this. Let’s just have fun,” he said.

In another interview, he said he had fun doing the job. In an interview with ‘GMA3: What You Need to Know’, Koy said, “It was a moment that I’ll always remember. It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie.”

I love the art of standup. It was cool the opportunity came to me, but hosting is just a beast. That’s about it,” he said. He admitted to having an “off night” and feeling a bit deflated by the reaction but said he has more of himself to offer in the future.

When asked about moments that he felt bad about, he pointed to the joke about Taylor Swift.“I think it was when the Taylor [Swift] one was just a little flat…It was a weird joke, I guess. But it was more on the NFL…I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way,” he said.
