    Six Major Moments From 2024 SAG Awards That You Can’t Miss

    The 2024 SAG Awards concluded last Saturday, with an evening filled with jam-packed stars decked up in fabulous and glittery outfits. While several deserving TV shows and actors were honored for their on-screen performances, some iconic moments that happened during the event got overlooked.

    Over their 30-year history, the SAGs have been host to several iconic pop-cultural moments, from mother-daughter duo Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds sharing the stage to Brad and Jen reuniting. As the ritual continued into the 2024 awards, here are the seven major moments that one can’t miss.

    6. Idris Elba’s Audition Anecdote

    Idris Elba shared a nostalgic anecdote about his early career during the SAG Awards this year. Elba revealed that he tried to sneak into Robert De Niro’s office to audition for A Bronx Tale, even though he was neither on time nor invited for the audition.

    Elba said “I used my English charm to convince the security guard and the receptionist that I had an appointment. And that’s when I ended up in A Bronx Tale.” The actor continued saying, “No, I’m lying now. I wasn’t in A Bronx Tale. I got kicked out of the office by Robert De Niro’s producing partner at the time, a gesture that I took to mean, kid, you’re going to go places. I’m Idris Elba, and I’m an actor.”

    Actor Pedro Pascal won the award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series for ‘The Last Of Us‘ — but he was not quite sober as accepted it. The actor confessed to having a few drinks before the nominations while accepting the award. “I’m a little drunk. I thought I could get drunk. And thank you, HBO for … geez Louise, I’m making a fool of myself. But thank you so much for this!” Pedro Pascal said, as he also got a bit emotional.

    Saturday night was Melissa McCarthy’s dream come true. The actress fangirled over singer Billie Eilish as the duo presented an award together. ‘The Little Mermaid’ star couldn’t stop gushing over the fact that they were acquainted with the singer even before they met. 

    The actress said, “I actually met you in utero because your mom was my first improv teacher. And guess who she was pregnant with? It was you!” While McCarthy asked the singer for her autograph, Billie Eilish went on the sign on her face.

    Out of all the reunions, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ reunion was the most surprising and heartfelt. Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway tossed out memorable lines from iconic film on stage along with their former co-star Meryl Streep. The trio united on stage to present the award for best male actor in a comedy series.

    2. Cillian Murphy Revealed Who Coined the ‘Oppenhomies’ Nickname

    2023 has been a phenomenal year for Cillian Murphy, as he gave the performance of a lifetime in ‘Oppenheimer’. The actor is winning back-to-back awards for his performance in the Christopher Nolan film. The SAG Awards were no exception.  

    While accepting the award for the best male actor at the SAG Awards, Cillian Murphy finally credited Olivia Thirlby for creating the nickname “Oppenhomies“. Murphy said, “Just an FYI on that exquisite moniker Oppenhomies. That was actually invented by the great Olivia Thirlby, So, Olivia, I think you should immediately trademark that and start merching the s— out of it because someone else will,” he said.

    With a career of over six decades, Barbra Streisand is one of the very few celebrities to have won almost all the prestigious awards including an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Streisand was honored with the Life Achievement Award at the 2024 SAG Awards.

    In an emotional speech, looking back at her career, the actress said, “I dream of a world where such prejudice is a thing of the past. I’ve always believed in the power of the truth. And I think really good actors rely on the character’s truth as well as their own.” The moving and inspiring speech brought Anne Hathaway to tears and also made Emma Stone and Joey King visibly emotional.

    As the awards season is nearing its end, fans are now curious about the Oscars, scheduled to be held on March 10. While SAG Awards gave us many moments to cherish and to be surprised at this year, we now await the drama that Oscars this year will bring.
