At San Diego Comic-Con, Lewis Pullman was on stage with the cast of ‘Spaceballs: The New One’, and delivering a pre-recorded message from his father, Bill Pullman

In the segment, Bill wrote a heartfelt letter about family but hilariously without Lewis, which got one of the panel’s biggest laughs.

The playful moment ended with the line, “Nothing beats family, and one day I hope I’m lucky enough to have a real family like the one I’m in in Spaceballs,” poking fun at the accidental omission and showing the father-son duo’s easygoing sense of humour.

Although it was a joke, Lewis made it clear that sharing the screen with his father is something he treasures deeply. The actor said he was initially reluctant to join the long-awaited sequel because he didn’t want to just do what his father Bill Pullman did. However, after reading the screenplay, his doubts disappeared.

I grew up watching this movie; I watched it before I watched Star Wars. When I watched Star Wars, I was like, ‘Why’d they remake Spaceballs?’ And so when this came along, I was like, ‘No, no way.’ And then I was like, ‘I can’t.’ And then Pop was like, ‘Why don’t we read it?’ and then I read it and was like, ‘Damn it. This is so good,’” he told People

Lewis said that the script was one of the funniest he had ever read, and that he doesn’t often laugh out loud when reading scripts, but this one made him. When he saw the creative team behind the project, he knew that he could not have turned it down, or he would have regretted it for the rest of his life.

Lewis also revealed that he and Bill had always dreamed of making a serious drama together someday. Instead, fate brought them together for a comedy sequel to one of the most beloved sci-fi spoofs ever made.

Looking back on the event, Lewis said he can’t even begin to explain how it felt. “We’ve been wanting to do that forever, and we never knew whether we could get the chance or not. And so doing it on a movie like Spaceballs 2 was just like, ‘What simulation? What world are we in right now?’.

It’s the third collaboration between the father and son, after ‘Battle of the Sexes’ and ‘The Ballad of Lefty Brown’. The return to the Spaceballs universe with his father is particularly significant to Lewis. It not only brings back childhood memories but also a unique family experience.
