Why Did Meghan Markle Break Her Friendship?
Meghan Markle reportedly cut off a journalist after he did not include a flattering anecdote in her Vanity Fair profile, according to a new book excerpted by The Times of London.
The excerpt comes from “Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War between the Windsors” by the British biographer Tom Bower, which is set to be published on Thursday.
“I thought this could have been an actual friendship,” Markle told Vanity Fair reporter Sam Kashner after reading the September 2017 profile, according to the book. “I don’t now think that can happen.”
A 2017 interview featured Meghan and the friend in the controversy who is not only a long-time contributor for Vanity Fair but also a dear friend to Meghan. During the interview, “Markle spoke about her speech at the United Nations Women’s Conference in 2015 and an anecdote about her campaigning success as a child against Procter & Gamble”, the book said.
The speech featured Markle talking about how she complained to Procter & Gamble’s chairman and then-first lady Hillary Clinton against an anti-feminist comment in an advertisement. She said she “successfully urged” Ivory, a dishwashing-liquid company owned by Procter & Gamble, to change the slogan from “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pan” to say “people” and not “women.”
But apparently, as the book says, Kashner said that the fact-checkers of Vanity Fair couldn’t check the accuracy and verification status of the comments. So it couldn’t be published in the Magazine. Well, that’s what reportedly pissed Meghan off and she decided to cut off her friendship with Kashner.
What Are Other Disputes That Increased Her Anger?
In early September, The members of Buckingham palace and Meghan’s publicists received a pre-publication copy of the profile. Even that didn’t turn out to be quite well, as Meghan was vulnerable with the title “Wild About Harry,” the book said.
On top of that, the book also suggests that Meghan’s father Thomas Markle knew that Clinton and Procter & Gamble had not replied to Meghan, as she had claimed, and that he had invented the success story.
