‘Good Grief‘ has hit the screens and is already making headlines. The movie is likely to be a success as it has already started garnering much attention. Dan Levy, who plays a lead role in the drama that he has also directed, opened up about the details of the movie and its making.
The Emmy-winning actor was speaking during a Netflix interview along with co-actors Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel. Levy narrated a rather amusing incident about how one of the scenes in the movie is inspired by a real-life incident.

What’s The Sex Toy That Dan Levy Found At His London Apartment?
Speaking about the movie ‘Good Grief‘, Dan Levy recalled how a previous tenant in his London apartment became the inspiration for a funny scene in the film. He explained how a scene in the movie where his character Marc discusses finding a sex toy left behind by a former occupant with friends Sophie, played by Ruth Negga, and Thomas, played by Himesh Patel, was drawn from his personal experience in London years ago.
Levy recalled the incident during a Netflix interview with Patel ahead of the movie’s release. “I think I was 20? And I found an apartment, and I was cleaning the apartment, and I pulled the bed out from the wall and felt something thump behind the bed,” he said.
“I didn’t have my cleaning gloves on — I thought it was a bottle of cleaning solution — and I went to reach for it,” he added. To his surprise, it was not a bottle of cleaning solution.
“I felt something phallic in nature kind of slip out of my hands. I looked over the bed and it was a perfume bottle that someone had wrapped in a condom to, I suppose, enjoy themselves with… and that was my first real London memory. And I’ve loved it ever since,” he said.
Patel then teased Levy about the way he is expressing love for London. “Such a terrible way of explaining why London is your favorite city in the world,” he said, as the interview continued.

Levy’s COVID-19 Experience Also Played A Role In The Making Of ‘Good Grief’
In a 2021 interview with Metro, Levy had shared some more details about his London apartment, wherein he had mentioned that a “mother-daughter situation was happening” there before he moved in 2005, stating that the do was running a successful business there.
“I much appreciate their hustle. I just didn’t want to see the leftovers of what they were running!” he said. Little did he know that the sex toys there would become an inspiration for one of the scenes in his film.
Apart from these anecdotes, Levy said that ‘Good Grief’ was also influenced by his struggles with grief during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s narrative revolves around Marc’s character played by Levy, as he copes with love and loss after the sudden death of his husband, played by Luke Evans.
“I was in a very strange headspace in terms of feeling the weight and the profound sense of tragedy of what the COVID pandemic had done for all of us, while at the same time trying to honor the passing of someone who meant so much to me,” Levy said. “It was hard for me to feel the specificity of loss when all I was feeling was grief for so long. It was that conversation that really expedited the concept of the movie,” he added
Good Grief is currently available for streaming on Netflix, while Levy’s interview can also be watched on the platform.
