“Don’t Mean To Sound So Hopeless”: Winona Ryder Laments Young Co-Stars’ Lack Of Love For Films

Winona Ryder has long been a fixture in Hollywood. From her early days in cult classics like ‘Beetlejuice‘ to her more recent role in ‘Stranger Things,’ Ryder has managed to stay relevant and beloved by audiences of all ages.

And she is finally back to reprise her iconic character as Lydia Deetz in Tim Burton‘s upcoming fantasy comedy horror film ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘, years after the original 1988 movie was released. In the movie, Jenna Ortega plays Astrid, the daughter of Lydia Deetz.

In a recent chat with the Los Angeles Times, Winona Ryder shared her thoughts on working with her younger co-stars. She’s a bit disheartened by their lack of enthusiasm for the very medium that made her a star. Ryder didn’t hold back when discussing her concerns about the younger actors’ relationship with cinema.

She mentioned that some of them seem more focused on the runtime than the art itself. “I don’t mean to sound so hopeless,” Ryder mused. “There are a few that are just not interested in movies. Like, the first thing they say is, ‘How long is it?‘”

And while Ryder worries about the future of film, considering it almost a religion, she knows she’s not in a position to control it. “I’m not a religious person,” she clarified. “I’m not anti-religion, but I feel like the closest is film and it’s to me a very sacred thing. I feel so protective, but I’m not in any place to be in control. It’s not up to me.”

Despite her subtle disappointment, Winona Ryder has found a shining star in her ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘ co-star Jenna Ortega. Ryder was nearly moved to tears when Ortega referenced specific shots from Mikhail Kalatozov’s 1964 film ‘I Am Cuba‘ during a scene they were shooting.

Director, Tim Burton also remarked that it’s “very special” to watch Ryder and Ortega interact. “To me, there’s a vibe about them that is always very strong,” he said.

Ryder said she appreciates getting to interact with the up-and-coming generation of film lovers who remind her of herself. She also talked about how her ‘Stranger Things‘ co-star, Finn Wolfhard, is obsessed with Elliott Gould. Still, she gets frustrated when there is a lack of curiosity among her more junior colleagues.

Speaking with Collider, Ryder said, “Jenna is absolutely one of my favorite people. She is the most authentic person. We bonded. Once the conversation started, it just never stopped, and that is really true.

She’s like the perfect puzzle piece to add, and she sort of completes it. I don’t even have enough adjectives. She’s just such an incredible person to work with and to know, and to know her is to absolutely love her.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘ hits theaters on September 6.
