Dwayne Johnson Gives ‘Historic’ Seven-Figure Donation To SAG-AFTRA Relief Fund Amid Strike

SAG-AFTRA joining the Writers Guild strike has put a big halt on Hollywood. The strike will likely be going on for quite some time now. There seems no definite date for the strike to end. In such conditions, many members face critical financial conditions.

The SAG-AFTRA has around 160,000 members who have joined in on the strike and might require financial assistance since all work is shut down. So today we will take a look at how Dwayne Johnson lent a helping hand to SAG-AFTRA at the time of need.

At the time of financial crises like the ongoing strike or during the COVID-19 pandemic, the SAG-AFTRA members are helped by the foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program. This time President Courtney B. Vance and executive director Cyd Wilson are looking out for financial assistance again.

And at times like these, they communicate with their 2700 highest-earning members for financial aid. This includes many Hollywood A-listers. Dwayne Johnson was one of them too. His team replied back with a positive response. And reportedly the ‘Jumanji’ actor donated a seven-figure cheque to the foundation.

“It was a love fest. It’s like, ‘Man, you’re stepping up in a way that is allowing others to know the dire necessity of it,’” Vance recalled, “This is him saying, ‘In such a time as this, I’m here and I’m not going anywhere, whatever you need me to do.’ And that sends a huge message to other folks to do the same thing.”

The foundation’s financial program has worked to support its members at the time of the pandemic as well. The grant delivers up to $1,500 per individual member. However, in case of an emergency or life-threatening condition, a lifetime member can receive up to $6,000 in emergency financial assistance.

It is a call to arms for all of us to know that we just have to step up however you can,” Vance said. “If your step up is $10, step up. Because that $10 is going to help somebody. If it’s $10,000, if it’s $10 million, step up, because we have to.”

Vance continued, “Everyone knows what happens when you go on strike, when you stand for something — as the saying goes, if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for everything — you can’t stand unless you have support underneath you, on the side, up top and up front. So Dwayne is letting everyone know, ‘I’m here. What are you going to do?’” Dwayne Johnson’s contribution at this time of need is really inspiring.
