Emma D’Arcy’s As Rhaenyra Targaryen In The ‘House Of The Dragon’
Showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik have described Rhaenyra as a character who doesn’t submit herself to the conventions of the world around her even if it makes her an outsider. Given this conviction, she rejects the notion that she is born to give birth to heirs and decides she is meant to rule over the Seven Kingdoms instead. The show will also elaborate upon the relationship between Rhaenyra and her best friend Alicent Hightower (played by Emily Carey and Olivia Cooke).
In an interview with Vogue, Emma talked about what she thinks the show represents: “What ‘House of the Dragon’ does well is identify that the patriarchal structure that [Rhaenyra and Alicent] live within is seeking to drive a wedge between them—that the way you consolidate male power and continue to sublimate women is to undo friendships that create solidarity and enable the imagining of new realities.”
D’Arcy assures that the show will not repeat the mistakes of ‘Game of Thrones’ including depicting serious violence against women. They argue that the show is built around two women and attempts to tell a story from their perspective and instead of glorifying patriarchal and oppressive figures it identifies their existence in the fantasy world.
