Francis Ford Coppola Accused Of Kissing Female Extras On ‘Megalopolis’ Set “To Get Them In The Mood” For A Nightclub Scene

Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola is facing accusations of unprofessional conduct on the set of his upcoming sci-fi epic, ‘Megalopolis’. A recent article in The Guardian details claims from unnamed female extras who allege Coppola engaged in unwanted physical contact during filming.

While the allegations are pretty serious, it has become a common theme in Hollywood that big names turn out to be not good people. If the allegations are true it can tank the upcoming film despite the anticipation around it.

The alleged incidents center around a two-day sequence set in a nightclub. According to the report, Coppola allegedly pulled women onto his lap and, more concerningly, tried to kiss extras who were scantily clad “to get them in the mood” for the scene. These accusations paint a disturbing picture, especially considering the power imbalance between a famed director and extras on set.

The story also includes comments from Darren Demetre, the film’s executive co-producer. Demetre disputes the allegations, portraying Coppola’s actions as a way to “inspire and establish the club atmosphere.” He further claims he witnessed only “kind hugs and kisses on the cheek,” and denies any knowledge of complaints during filming.

This “he said, they said” scenario makes it difficult to derive the full truth. However, the nature of the alleged actions raises a red flag. The power dynamics on a film set are inherently unequal, and directors hold significant sway over actors and extras. Any unwanted physical contact, especially under the guise of getting someone “in the mood,” can be construed as harassment.

Coppola’s legacy as a filmmaking giant is undeniable. He’s the mind behind classics like The Godfather’ and ‘Apocalypse Now.’  However, these allegations arrive in the wake of the #MeToo movement. In this context, it’s impossible to ignore these claims. Before any decision is made a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the validity of the accusations.
