Matthew Perry will forever be remembered as the lovable, sarcastic Chandler Bling from ‘Friends‘. His perfect comedic timing and unforgettable one-liners kept fans laughing, crying and laughing some more for 10 seasons. But his sudden death in 2023 left a hole in the hearts of many.
Marta Kauffman, co-creator of ‘Friends‘, had a close relationship with Perry. She shared some heartwarming recollections of her time with him, revealing a side of the actor that fans might not have seen.

Marta Kauffman Wants Everyone To Remember Matthew For His Funny Nature
In a recent interview with the UK’s The Times, Kauffman revealed that she had been in contact with Perry with two weeks before his passing. “He seemed really good,” she said. She added that they were FaceTiming and catching up.
But Kauffman’s message is clear: it’s important to celebrate Perry for his incredible sense of humour and the happiness he spread. She suggests 2 meaningful ways to honour his memory.
“Two things come to mind [about how to celebrate him]: One of them is to donate to drug treatment centers — let’s fight the disease,” she shared. The second way is simpler but just as impactful. Kauffman suggested, “Watch ‘Friends’ and remember him not as a man who died like that but as a man who was hilariously funny and brought joy to everybody.”

A Legacy Beyond The Struggles
Kauffman’s reflections were echoed by her co-creator David Crane, who also shared his thoughts on Perry’s journey. Crane recounted the moment they became aware of Perry’s struggles with addiction.
They were already “a family on a lot of levels.” Crane even mentioned how they offered Perry the option to step away from the show, but Perry was firm: “No, this is really important to me,” he said.
Shortly after Perry’s death, Kauffman, Crane and executive producer Kevin Bright released a joint statement to EW. They expressed their grief and the profound loss they felt. “It still seems impossible,” they said.
“All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.” They continued, “He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”
Law authorities are currently investigating Matthew Perry’s death. They have recently arrested 5 individuals in connection to Perry’s death including his own assistant. Perry was taking a high dosage of Ketamine in his last days which his assistant helped with.
