At a recent gathering at the Oxford Writers’ House, George R.R. Martin announced that not one, not two, but 7 new ‘Game of Thrones‘ shows are in the works. The author shared that these upcoming projects will include a mix of 3 live-action and 4 animated series.

The news was later corroborated by the ever-reliable @westerosorg, who spilled the beans on social media. The shows will add to the already bustling spinoffs like ‘House of the Dragon‘ and the newly confirmed ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating live-action series such as ‘Aegon the Conqueror‘ and ‘Ten Thousand Ships.’ Among the animated shows are ‘Nine Voyages,’ ‘The Golden Empire,’ and ‘The Sea Snake,’ which had previously been shelved but are now back in play. ‘Nine Voyages‘ will follow the adventures of Corlys Velaryon, played by Steve Toussaint, a character from ‘House of the Dragon.’

The shadow of Game of Thrones‘ Season 8 lingers big, and for many, the wounds from that finale is yet to heal. Social media lit up with mixed reactions, as fans debated whether the new shows were a genuine expansion or a diversion from addressing the much-maligned ending of the original series.

Fans are vocal about their desires. They believe the unresolved dissatisfaction with the original series’ finale, especially Arya Stark’s anticlimactic victory over the White Walkers and Bran Stark as the ruler of the 6 kingdoms, needs a redo.

While Martin’s new ventures promises fresh narratives and potentially some familiar faces, the call for redoing the finale persists. “We can get 7 more shows BUT WE CANT RE DO SEASON 8!!!” seems to be the unspoken sentiment echoed across fan forums.

Game of Thrones‘ and ‘House of the Dragon‘ are currently streaming on HBO Max.
