Despite ‘Twisters‘ earning an astounding $80.5 million at the home box office, one of the most talked-about things on social media is something that wasn’t in the film. Before ‘Twisters‘ was released, a set video with actors Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell passionately rehearsing a kissing scene went viral.
But the film entirely omitted the scene from its theatrical version. Filmmaker and executive producer Steven Spielberg made the conscious decision to remove the scene, and thereby disappointed fans. Here’s why he did that and why people are enraged about it.
Steven Spielberg Has A Rather Stormy Vision For ‘Twisters’
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, ‘Twisters‘ is a stand-alone sequel to the 1996 hit ‘Twister‘. Steven Spielberg, who is co-directing the film, decided to remove the viral kiss as part of a creative choice aimed at enhancing the storyline, as claimed by actor Anthony Ramos. “Steven is all about the story. He felt the kiss was unnecessary,” Ramos said during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
In another interview with Collider, Daisy Edgar-Jones also talked about Spielberg’s decision to not include the kiss in the film. “I think it stops the film feeling too clichéd, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story. They’re united by their shared passion for something,” she said
Spielberg’s decision to cut out the kissing scene fits with a broader Hollywood trend, where directors are favoring character and story development above pointless love subplots. Spielberg’s long-standing obsession with tornadoes, also seen in his 2022 film ‘The Fabelmans,’ is also reflected in this movie.

Cast And Crew Face Challenges Behind The Scenes Of ‘Twisters’
Lee Isaac Chung, known for his award-winning film ‘Minari‘, has worked through the challenge of following suit with the original film ‘Twister‘. He also spoke about his experience of working with Spielberg. “Working with Spielberg is like getting a masterclass in storytelling every day,” Chung said, expressing his gratitude for Spielberg’s guidance.
The film has been a challenging one for the cast and crew as they faced several obstacles during the production of ‘Twisters‘. Daisy Edgar-Jones went a step ahead to work on her character in the film and decided to chase a real tornado, describing it as a “cool” but intense experience.
Glen Powell, meanwhile, shared his own pressures of filming on a meticulously crafted set. “They [production designer] basically built one of the most impressive sets I’ve ever seen. But there’s not that many scenes [in it]. It’s really two very short scenes that take place there. And I was like, ‘Man if we mess up the scenes they spent so long spending such detail on… that if this gets cut out of the movie, they’re gonna just hate me forever!‘” he said.
‘Twisters‘ is now playing in theaters nationwide.
