Bradley Cooper’s Soberiety Helped Him To Freely Play Jackson Maine In ‘A Star Is Born’
Recently, Bradley Cooper starred in one of the episodes of ‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge,’ where he confessed that fame did not affect him. To this, the host, Bear Grylls, said that he did have some wild years. Bradley responded, “In terms of alcohol and drugs, yeah. But nothing to do with fame, though.” He admitted, “But I was lucky. I got sober at 29 years old, and I’ve been sober for 19 years. I’ve been very lucky.”
During the conversation, Bear Grylls asked Bradley Cooper if his addiction years helped him play Jackson Maine in his 2018 directorial debut, A Star is Born.’ In the film, he plays an alcohol addict who meets Ally, played by Lady Gaga, and helps her transform her career.
The ‘American Sniper’ actor responded, “It made it easier to be able to really enter in there. And thank goodness I was at a place in my life where I was at ease with all of that, so I could really let myself go. I’ve been very lucky with the roles I’ve had to play. It’s been a real blessing. I hope I get to keep doing it.”

The Actor Credits Will Arnett For Helping Him Getting Sober
Bradley Cooper admitted during the ‘Smart Less’ podcast that Will Arnett helped him realize that he needed to get sober. During the podcast, he narrated the story of his shooting days for ‘Alias.’ He said that he felt like he was back in high school. The actor confessed, “I could not get into any clubs; no girls wanted to look at me. I was totally depressed.”
Later, Bradley Cooper got kicked out of ‘Alias, and he was suffering from an injury to his Achilles’ tendon. In order to mask his insecurities, he used mean humor when he was actually mean to people. But one dinner with Will Arnett changed the actor for good. The Canadian actor made him realize that he had hit ‘rock bottom.’
During the podcast, he said, “Will was like, ‘Hey man, do you remember we had dinner the other night? How do you think that went?'” Cooper recalled. “I remember being at the dinner and thinking I was so funny, and I thought these two guys who were my heroes thought that I was so funny. I was like, ‘I thought it was great. I thought I was killing.’ ” Will told him that he was an expletive man.
Will Arnett helped Bradley Cooper realize that he had a problem with drugs and alcohol. He added, “That was the first time I ever realized I had a problem with drugs and alcohol. The guy that I think is doing mean humor is telling me the truth, and it changed my entire life.”
