How Julia Roberts Is Indebted To Martin Luther King Jr. And Coretta Scott King For Her Birth?

The three-times Golden Globes Awards winning actress Julia Roberts just turned 55! On October 28th, 2022, she wrote a post dedicated to her 55th birthday. The actress was born on October 28th, 2022 in Georgia.

The United States of America was plagued with racial and war issues at the time of her birth. The country was at war with Vietnam and the African-Americans were protesting against the segregation and racial injustice spread across America. At the forefront, Martin Luther King was helping the Civil Rights Movement.  The segregation phase didn’t allow Black and Whites to mingle, but the King family helped Julia Roberts in a big way.

On her birthday, an interview of Julia Roberts with Gayle King resurfaced. In the interview, Gayle King recounted the past of Roberts with the two historical figures. In the interview, Gayle King asked, “I just want to take a step back for you Julia [Roberts], because you have two historical figures that I bet most people that I bet most of people don’t know about you.”

She continued, “Your brush with… let’s start with the day you were born. Who paid for the hospital bill?”

The question astonished the ‘Pretty Woman’ actress. She praised Gayle saying, “Okay… her research is very good.” Julia acknowledged, “The King family [Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King] paid for my hospital bill.” The media extraordinaire asked, “And how did that come about? Why did they do that? Because of your dad Walter Roberts?”

The Academy-winning actress agreed to it and added, “And obviously because my parents couldn’t pay for the hospital bill. My parents had a theater school in Atlanta called ‘The Actors and Writers Workshop.’

Roberts recalled the time when Coretta approached her mother, Betty Lou Bredemus. She said, “One day Coretta called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school because they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept her kids. My mom was like, ‘Sure, come on over,’ and so they all just became friends, and they helped us out of a jam.” King appreciated this episode between King and Roberts family saying that it was rare to see “little black children interacting with little white kids in acting school” back in the day.

Just before turning 55, Roberts sat down with Jane Pauley on CBS Sunday Morning about her “other dream” apart from working as an actor. Julia is an accomplished actor with varied roles and accolades in her bag of filmography. She starred in rom-coms like ‘Notting Hill,’ ‘Pretty Woman,’ and ‘Runaway Bride’.  Apart from being a stellar actress, she is also a box office darling. Along with her best friend George Clooney, they boosted the box-office business with $1 billion with their five collaborations.

Now, at the juncture where she is content with her job as an actor, another dream of hers has come true. In the interview, she said, “When I’m not working, [being a homemaker] is my full-time job. It isn’t rainbows and kittens every day, but it does bring me a lot of joy. It’s just never consumed me, being an actor. It is my dream come true, but it is not my only dream come true.”

Roberts and Danny Moder got married in 2002 and they have three kids—twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and Henry. She continued, “The life that I have built with my husband, the life that we’ve built with our children, that’s the best stuff. To come home at the end of the day, triumphantly, to them.”
