Billie Eilish Opens Up About The Identity Crisis Her Blonde Hair Left Her With
Billie Eilish peeled back the layers of her beauty evolution as she recently revealed how her blonde hair transformation put her into a major identity crisis. Speaking to ‘Rolling Stone‘ about the unexpected journey of self-discovery triggered because of her blonde hair, Billie Eilish opened up about the impact her styling choice during the Met Gala in 2021 had on her life.
“And then I dyed my hair blond and I immediately was like, ‘Oh, I have no idea who I am,’” she said, describing the experience as a whirlwind. She said that the blonde hair were a mere symbol of the softer tone of her then-released album ‘Happier Than Ever’, but it majorly felt like a departure from her authentic self.
Finneas O’Connell, her brother and collaborator, said the album came more as a coping mechanism for Eilish amid the chaos of change. “In a weird way, that was a little like being in a tornado cellar, reading a cute little story,” Finneas said in the profile. “It was a coping mechanism of an album.”
Billie Eilish’s blonde revelation came to her fans through a viral Instagram video that left many surprised. With a penchant for decorating her hair with tinges of bright colors, a completely blonde look of the songstress took many aback. Her signature grungy style was nowhere to be seen during the Met Gala appearance that followed.

Billie Eilish Says Her Met Gala Look Was Inspired By Her Childhood Love For Barbie Dolls
During the Met Gala, Eilish styled herself in a peach tulle Oscar de la Renta gown, coupled with her blonde hair — which was nothing like her signature style. Her fans, true to their love for her, lauded her new look anyway. There was no doubt about her looking gorgeous in the new outfit. It was just the unfamiliarity of it that came as a surprise. Turns out, it was a needed change in Eilish’s life that she now appreciates, and also a conscious choice she made because of her love for Barbie dolls in childhood.
“It just was time. It was time for this, and I feel like I’ve grown so much in the last few years,” the singer had told Keke Palmer on the red carpet at the time. “I’ve always wanted to do this. I was just scared and didn’t feel comfortable in my skin and I feel like I finally did,” she added.
In another revelation, she also said the blue color of her hair was an accident. “Dude, what’s so interesting to me is that blue has always been my least favorite color,” she said. “Which is so stupid because my hair was blue for years. But I didn’t mean for it to be — that was an accident,” Eilish added.
As of now, the songstress is all set for the release of her third album, ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft‘, set to release on May 17.
