What better month to release the story of Queen Nzinga than Black History Month? Netflix will release the new docuseries on February 15th, 2023. ‘African Queens’ will chronicle the story of Nzinga, the 17th-century queen of today’s Angola. Jada Pinkett Smith is serving as the Executive Producer and narrator of the story. Nutopia and Will Smith and Jada’s production house ‘Westbrook Studios’ produced the series.
The Oscar nominations for the 95th annual ceremony are out. At the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, Will Smith won the trophy in the category for his performance in ‘King Richard’. However, the ceremony was marred with the infamous slapgate with Chris Rock. The comedian took a dig at Jada for her alopecia condition. Now, Jada Pinkett Smith has opened up about what she learnt from her condition getting publicized.

Jada Pinkett Smith Learnt About Deeper Beauty After Oscars Slapgate
More than any other thing, the Oscars 2022 was known for the altercation that happened between Will Smith and Chris Rock. During one of the monologues, Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia condition which has led to the loss of her hair. He compared her to G.I. Jane and he said, “Jada, can’t wait for G.I. Jane 2”.
Due to this, Will Smith got infuriated and went on stage to slap Chris Rock. This created a lot of uproars. Will Smith was ousted from attending the Oscars ceremony for the next 10 years. He apologized for his behavior.
Almost a year after, Jada Pinkett Smith has reflected on the lessons she learnt after the highly publicized slapgate. She sat for an interview with ‘The Guardian’ for the new docudrama ‘African Queens’. During the interview, she said, “I learned a lot about detachment. And I learned a deeper beauty within myself, being able to let my hair go”.

The Actress Called Her Diagnosis The “A Great Teacher“
Jada Pinkett Smith has opened up about her condition on her talk show ‘Red Table Talk’ and even shared a post on Instagram. During the interview, she continued saying that getting diagnosed with alopecia was a great teacher. “It’s been a hard one, a scary one – because specifically as Black women, we identify so much of ourselves with our hair. And it was scary. I had to really dig deep and see the beauty of myself beyond my aesthetics,” Jada said.
While talking to Netflix, the actress discussed why she chose ‘African Queens’. Jada said, I really wanted to represent Black women,” Pinkett Smith tells Tudum. “We don’t often get to see or hear stories about Black queens, and that was really important for me, as well as for my daughter, and just for my community to be able to know those stories because there are tons of them!”
She continued, “The sad part is that we don’t have ready access to these historical women who were so powerful and were the backbones of African nations”.
