On Monday’s episode of ‘Armchair Expert‘, hosted by Dax Shepard, Julianne Hough got real about why she decided to end things with Seacrest after three years. According to Julianne, the timing of their relationship coincided with her career taking off, which made her worry that people might get the wrong idea.

The rug was swept up from underneath me, and I was just flying, and I was experiencing things that I didn’t even know existed,” she recalled. But instead of soaking in the excitement, she became consumed by an insecurity: “I don’t ever want anybody to think that I’m with him for this reason,” she explained, adding that she started to “play smaller.”

Shepard pointed out that she probably didn’t want to seem like she was using Seacrest to further her own career. Julianne agreed, noting that Seacrest had been in similar situations before their “romantic” and “exciting” relationship. So, instead of being her authentic self, she started to mold herself into the person she thought Seacrest needed.

I, again, overcompensated,” she said, admitting that she was “malleable” to fit into whatever role would make him happy. But in doing so, Julianne realized she wasn’t living her truth. “I don’t know if I’ve ever truly been in love with someone, but I have loved the feeling of being loved,” she confessed.

And then because I’m so filled with love from someone, of course I love you. I love everyone,” she shared. But then came the real kicker: “I’ve been in love with everybody I’ve ever dated, but have I?

When it came time to end her relationship with Seacrest in 2013, Julianne faced a lot of pushback. “I remember when I decided to break things off, I had a lot of these Brentwood moms and producers in that world that were like, ‘What are you doing?‘” she said.

Their confusion didn’t shake her resolve though. “Your life is completely set up,” they told her. But Julianne was clear about one thing: “I didn’t build it.

At the end of the day, Julianne Hough chose herself. She made the difficult decision to step away from a life that many would envy to build something that was truly hers. “I didn’t think about what people thought,” she admitted. “I was just wrestling on the inside… I definitely was in full self-preservation mode, so I was only concerned about me.
