Dan Levy Faced A Lot Of Homophobia While Coming Out
Like his character on ‘Schitt’s Creek‘, Dan Levy is also gay in real life. He came out in 2015. He looked back at the homophobia he faced at that time. Levy recalled one such experience at a shooting set: “I remember walking into work one day and someone asked me what I did on the weekend. I said, ‘Well, I installed a dimmer switch in my apartment.’ And that person said, ‘Wow, it’s almost like you’re a real man.’”
Levy agreed the casual homophobia was not right but he also said that “there was no sensitivity, and there was nobody to go to because it was a different time.”
He also looked back on the fact there were not many actors who came out as gay at that time. However, the number of gossip bloggers far exceeded the number who made it their job to out people. They went about outing people without their consent which was very insensitive.

Dane Levy Thinks Society Lacked Sensitivity Earlier
“We didn’t have the sensitivity, I think, that we do now, at least around people’s coming out and the fact that it’s an incredibly personal experience,” Dan Levy said in an interview.
In the series ‘Schitt’s Creek‘, David Rose owns his sexuality and identity with confidence, pride and joy. However, in real life Dan Levy faced a lot of homophobia from society.
“I mean, I think we all knew it at the time. So, when you do feel like there’s this hunt to out gay people of note in culture, it almost makes you want to hide even more because you don’t want to draw any attention to yourself,” Dan Levy said in an interview while talking about the homophobia and coming out.
