Why Janet Jackson Refused to Appear in the ‘Michael’ Biopic as Film Breaks Box Office Records

In Short
  • Janet Jackson declined to appear in the Michael Jackson biopic, respecting her own wishes.
  • Director Antoine Fuqua confirmed the production respected her boundaries and praised her support for Jaafar Jackson.
  • Family tensions are speculated but La Toya Jackson denied any issues with Jermaine over the film.

The highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, called ‘Michael‘, is finally in theaters. It brings the King of Pop’s story to the big screen, but even with a star-studded cast and deep family involvement, one famous name from the Jackson dynasty is missing.

Janet Jackson, the “Rhythm Nation” star and Michael’s youngest sister, does not appear in the film. As the movie breaks box office records, fans want to know why she isn’t in it.

According to her sister La Toya Jackson, the choice was Janet’s own. “She was asked, and she kindly declined,” La Toya Jackson told Variety at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on April 20. “So you have to respect her wishes.

The biopic stars the late singer’s nephew Jaafar Jackson as Michael. It focuses on his rise from child star to global icon. The movie includes their siblings Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and La Toya, but not Janet, Rebbie, or Randy.

Janet has not spoken publicly about her absence, but director Antoine Fuqua, known for ‘Training Day‘, said the production respected her boundaries. He had nothing but nice things to say about her.

I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you know it’s okay,” Fuqua said. “She’s supportive of Jaafar and that’s what matters.

Fans have started to wonder if past family tensions played a part. RadarOnline points out that Michael admitted to teasing Janet when they were kids. He called her names like “cow” and “slaughter hog,” which Janet talked about in her own documentaries. Still, insiders say her absence might not mean there’s a fight. She may just want space from the Hollywood biopic machine.

La Toya also shot down rumors that she or Janet clashed with their brother Jermaine over the film. “There was absolutely no problem whatsoever,” La Toya said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “None whatsoever, and please believe that.”

Janet’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment. While she is not in the film, the rest of the family has shown support and praised Jaafar for how much he looks and moves like his uncle.

Even with Janet missing, ‘Michael‘ is playing in theaters. Fans are left to wonder what a scene between the King and Queen of Pop might have looked like. For now, they will have to enjoy the music and respect Janet’s silence.
