Julia Roberts Was Almost Cast For ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Flashback Sequence With Tom Cruise. Why Was She Dropped?

‘Mission Impossible 7’ is packed with an entertaining cinematic experience and not to forget Tom Cruise‘s death-defying stunts. Ethan Hunt has now become Cruise’s most popular character, who is a highly skilled agent with his greatest liability being love for his family and the fellow members of his IMF team.

It is not a hidden fact that Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have routinely set and risen the bar for all action movies including solid character backgrounds, engaging scripts, and most importantly exhilarating stunts. Interestingly Julia Roberts was almost a part of ‘Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One’.

Julia Roberts could have played a crucial role in ‘Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One’ as one of the brunette women Ethan Hunt failed to keep alive. Her character would have been the essential one connecting to the big plot of the film. The director of the film Christopher McQuarrie revealed that he considered including a scene where a de-aged Tom Cruise featured alongside Esai Morales, the antagonist.

In a new Empire Spoiler Special film podcast interview, Christopher McQuarrie revealed that he considered Julia Roberts and digitally de-aging her to play a role in the flashback scenes that show how Ethan Hunt and villain Gabriel played by Esai Morales are connected. Earlier, Gabriel murdered Marie, Ethan’s girlfriend, and framed him for her death.

In the film, Marie is played by Mariela Garriga, but McQuarrie reveals that he originally wanted to cast a megastar most probably ‘Eat, Prey, Love’ star from the beginning of the first ‘Mission: Impossible’ film.

Christopher McQuarrie had huge plans for connecting Ethan Hunt’s past to a bigger picture by including Julia Roberts. However McQuarrie decided against it for numerous reasons, but primarily because of how distracting it was. Wanting to introduce a de-aged Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts, but de-aging multiple actors was also getting extremely out of budget

The director of the ‘Mission: Impossible‘ film said, “The only way I could have seen doing the sequence justice [using de-aging] was to somehow convince Julia Roberts to come in and be this small role at the beginning of this story. And of course, as you’re conceptually going through it, you’re like, ‘Now all anybody’s going to be doing is thinking about the de-aging of Julia Roberts, and Esai, and Tom, and Henry Czerny”.

McQuarrie further added “I got the bill for de-aging those people before their salaries were even factored into it. And if you put two of them in a shot together, or three of them in a shot together, it would have been as expensive as the train by the time we were done. It was so … the force multiplier of — and the way we shoot scenes, and the fluidity, and the camera movement. And of course, that wouldn’t be the style of the movie in 1989. That wouldn’t make sense if you were shooting an ’89 ‘Mission’ like a 2023 ‘Mission’.”
