Kate Winslet Says She Was Pushed Toward “Fat Girl” Roles Early In Her Career

Kate Winslet has spent decades in the spotlight and built a career that speaks for itself. Known for her strong performances and confidence on screen, she has often been praised for doing things her own way in Hollywood.

But behind that success, Winslet faced comments that focused less on her acting and more on her appearance. In a recent interview, the actress looked back on those moments and shared how much they affected her.

Winslet shared her experience during an appearance on Desert Island Discs. She said that when she began taking acting seriously and signed with a child agent, people often focused on her body. At the time, she described herself as a little stocky. She recalled a moment with a drama teacher that stayed with her.

According to Winslet, the teacher told her she could have a career only if she were willing to accept “fat girl” roles. Looking back now, Winslet said it was wrong for adults to speak to children that way. She explained that comments like those can stay with someone for years, especially when they are still young and finding confidence.

When ‘Titanic‘ made Winslet a worldwide star, the focus on her body did not stop. Instead, it became more public. Many people commented on her appearance rather than her acting, especially when she was in her early twenties. In a December 2024 interview on 60 Minutes, Winslet watched old clips of people talking about her body.

Winslet said those comments were appalling and questioned how anyone could say such things about a young actress trying to handle sudden fame. She also shared that she later confronted one of those critics face-to-face. Winslet said she told the person she hoped their words would haunt them.

Winslet also spoke about how intense the attention became during that time. She said she felt scared to go to sleep because paparazzi followed her everywhere. She recalled people tapping her phone and constantly watching her while she was mostly alone. She described that period as frightening and overwhelming, especially since she was still very young.
