Keanu Reeves Talks About The Existential Questions That Inspired His First Novel ‘The Book Of Elsewhere’

Keanu Reeves, the star of ‘The Matrix‘ and ‘John Wick,’ is diving into the world of literature with his first novel, ‘The Book of Elsewhere‘. Co-authored by renowned sci-fi writer China Miéville, who is known for ‘The City & the City‘ and ‘Kraken,’ the novel marks the latest expansion of Reeves’ ‘BRZRKR‘ universe.

This franchise began with a 2021 comic book series and follows the story of Unute, an 80,000-year-old warrior also known as B. In ‘The Book of Elsewhere,’ readers will be taken on a journey that transcends time and space, exploring the deeper lore of the BRZRKR universe. Here’s what Reeves himself has said about the book.

In an interview with The New York Times, Keanu Reeves discussed how writing ‘The Book of Elsewhere‘ has helped learn more about himself. He said, “It surprised me in the creative act, what gets revealed to oneself. Maybe the creative act is a kind of talking, you know. And so maybe I have father issues and mother issues. And maybe I think about death.

Reeves said he has used the ‘BRZRKR‘ comics and ‘The Book of Elsewhere‘ to explore profound themes that are often philosophical and social in nature. He confessed that his work has led him to question violence and mortality. “Maybe I don’t understand the violence of the world,” Reeves told the Times.

I don’t understand that we all know we’re going to die, and we kill each other over things that are, perhaps as you look back at them, not so important. Maybe I wonder about the world, you know, how did we get here, who are we,” he added.

Reeves also reflected on the themes of technology’s role and humanity’s future that he has covered in his book. “I wonder about this kind of extinction motive that it seems the species has,” he said. “I don’t know why we’re in such a rush to get off the planet and become digitized. Maybe I wonder about love. And the power of it. Why is death so strong and love so frail, and yet it’s the strongest force on the planet?” he added.

Keanu Reeves’ creativity knows no bounds. His passion for storytelling has propelled the ‘BRZRKR‘ universe into new realms. Besides comics and novels, the franchise is also expanding with a live-action movie and an anime series.

Both projects will star Reeves and are currently in development at Netflix. “Show business looks at it like, what else can we do, but I come at it from the artist’s side, like what else can we make,” Reeves explained. “From the very beginning, I was hoping that other creators and artists could play… with the toys.”

Reeves’ artistic endeavors span beyond the ‘BRZRKR‘ universe and his acclaimed acting career. He also plays bass in the band ‘Dogstar‘, has acted in the video game ‘Cyberpunk 2077,‘ and owns a custom motorcycle company.

He has also written the text for two photography books by his partner, Alexandra Grant. With so many feathers on his cap, the actor now awaits the success of ‘The Book Of Elsewhere’ before he adds another one.
