Michelle Pfeiffer has spent decades leading major Hollywood films, but she no longer wants the responsibility of carrying a movie alone.
Recent television success has introduced the three-time Oscar nominee to a more enjoyable way of working, and she now prefers sharing the spotlight with an ensemble cast.
Michelle Pfeiffer Is Done Leading Movies
Pfeiffer revealed her surprising career decision during The Hollywood Reporter and Apple TV’s Leading the Narrative: The Women of Apple TV event over the weekend. She is not retiring from acting or completely abandoning cinema, but leading another movie no longer appeals to her.

“I never want to star in another movie, I swear to God,” Pfeiffer said, according to the outlet. “I only want to do ensemble pieces. It’s so much more fun, I love it so much.” Fans may find the announcement unexpected because Pfeiffer has built an extraordinary film career.
Pfeiffer has enjoyed a major television run over the past year through ‘The Madison‘ and ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles‘. She stars in and executive-produces both projects. ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles‘ recently earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. However, many viewers believed her performance in The Madison also deserved recognition.
Both programs have received second-season renewals, while The Madison has already secured a third season. ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles‘ tells the story of a young single mother who opens an OnlyFans account to support herself and her child. Pfeiffer portrays her mother, while Nick Offerman, Greg Kinnear, Michael Angarano and Nicole Kidman complete the star-studded cast.
Pfeiffer praised the powerful opportunities television now offers women while speaking alongside fellow Emmy nominees Fanning, Dale Dickey, Karolina Wydra, Rhea Seehorn and Jessica Williams. “I’ve just been so bowled over by the female performances on television. And honestly, they’re just really owning TV,” she said.

Complicated and imperfect characters helped Pfeiffer connect deeply with Margo’s Got Money Troubles. “I love how complicated and flawed all these characters are, and it really reminds me of that famous Robin Williams quote. In it, he says, ‘Remember that everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about, and be kind,’” she said.

“That kind of, for me, sums up the show and the message of the show, and I’m really proud to be a part of it.” The Madison explores the wealthy Clyburn family’s journey to Montana after the unexpected death of patriarch Preston. Pfeiffer plays his grieving widow, Stacy, alongside Elle Chapman, Beau Garrett, Amiah Miller and several other cast members.
Pfeiffer previously said that she joined The Madison before reading an official script. Writer Taylor Sheridan only provided a “skeletal” overview of the emotional premise, but she trusted his creative vision. She explained how the Yellowstone creator “wanted to cast it first and then write around [us]” while developing the roles.
Television has clearly given Pfeiffer the collaborative experience she wants, making ensemble projects the ideal path for the next chapter of her career.
