It is not common for celebrities to venture into the education sector, but when Kanye West opened a private institute in Los Angles it immediately made it to the headlines for the wrong reasons. The idea of a celebrity giving back to the community through education sounded outlandish, but like some of the rapper’s other projects, Donda Academy has become controversial.
Named after his late mother, Donda Academy cost $15,000 a year making fans curious about how different is Kanye West’s school different from other private schools. Due to its unorthodox approach, Donda Academy has become the subject of two lawsuits. Know more about the allegations on Kanye West’s private school.
What Are The Allegations Against Kanye West’s Donda Academy?
As per the lawsuits filed by the school’s employers, the Donda Academy follows bizarre rules. Students were only served sushi for lunch which reportedly cost Ye $10,000 a week. Additionally, the kids were not allowed to use forks and only had to sit on floors. Only because Ye had banished chairs in place of foam floor cushions. Surprisingly, even colors were also forbidden and students had to wear all black; cups and bowls had to be grey.
Another bizarre thing at Donda Insitute is that there is no second floor because Kanye West is “afraid of stairs”. And since he doesn’t like glass, the windows of the school are empty. Perhaps most disturbingly, the school doors were locked from the outside during the school day. Although Ye and his lawyers have dismissed their allegations and depiction of Dondad Academy as a “dystopian institution designed to satisfy Ye’s idiosyncrasies as false and untrue”.

Who Exposed Donda Academy?
If not a run for president, it is school, Kanye West can never get anything done right without getting dragged into controversies. One of the two lawsuits was filed by Isaiah Medows, former assistant principal, and the other by three former teachers. Meadows is alleging breach of contract, while the teacher’s lawsuit claims they were wrongfully terminated. Both cases highlighted the terrible conditions at Donda Academy. According to NBC News, Gregory Suhr Ye’s lawyer responded to these comments by saying, “None of it is true and the allegations do a disservice to the Donda Academy’s current staff and students and their parents who will attest to their positive experience.”
This is not the first time Kanye West’s school has gotten into trouble. In October 2022, the school was temporarily closed due to Ye’s anti-Semitic remarks. One of the parents, Chuck Bailey Jr. who was involved with Donda Academy spoke to Fox 11 Los Angeles after the school was shut down temporarily. “The kids haven’t done nothing wrong… It’s not fair to them. When you make comments or you do stuff, you have to think about your loved ones, and these kids would be considered his loved ones,” Chuck Bailey Jr. opened up about the incident.
