In a definite twist to the British Royal drama, Prince Harry has officially declared his citizenship in the United States. The Prince, married to Meghan Markle with two children, declared that America would now be his primary residence. The decision marks a significant shift since he stepped down from his royal duties in 2020.
According to documents obtained by the Daily Mail, the Duke of Sussex also updated his housing records to reflect his status as a resident of the US. According to the paperwork submitted by Companies House for Harry’s eco-travel venture Travalyst, the change in residency was noted on June 29, 2023.
The significant update comes just a day after Harry and Meghan Markle vacated their UK home, Frogmore Cottage after their eviction by King Charles III. For now, it remains uncertain how this change will impact Harry’s royal titles. But reports suggest that he is likely to discuss the matter with his father during an upcoming visit to London.
Prince Harry May Have To Face Issues Because Of His Disclosure Of Drug Abuse In ‘Spare’
Though he is now officially a citizen of America after the legal adjustments, Prince Harry has emphasized his affection for the UK. “The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the US,” Prince Harry had said in a written statement read in a London court during his legal bid for taxpayer-funded police security in December 2023.
“That cannot happen if it’s not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil,” he added. Despite considering American citizenship, Harry had at the time clarified that it was not a current priority for him.
After switching citizenship, Prince Harry is likely to face some potential complications according to legal experts. Harry’s past revelations about drug use in his memoir, ‘Spare’, could raise an issue, however, legal experts suggest that this disclosure may not jeopardize his visa status unless there are other legal issues.
