Simu Liu appeared on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers‘ and spoke about how his life changed when he started acting. The 36-year-old Canadian actor shared that losing his accounting job and going for auditions didn’t feel like a normal career change in his house. It felt like a big failure. Liu said the level of shame in his family was extreme, especially in Asian households where people expect you to choose a stable job.

He explained that it felt like his family treated him the same way they would treat someone addicted to meth and living on the street. He also said he wasn’t joking when he said that. Liu explained that he wanted people to understand how serious it was in his home. He said things got really bad, and the situation felt heavy for him.
Liu On Dealing With The Abandonment

While sharing more, Liu talked about a recent trip he took to China with his family. He said it was his first time going back in 15 years. During the trip, he also visited his grandmother, whom he hadn’t seen in a very long time. Liu admitted he felt guilty about not coming back earlier. But he also said he had a reason.

He explained that after he lost his accounting job and started acting, he became the “black sheep” in the family. Liu joked that his family even stopped including him in family trips. He said they disinvited him for a long time. And he shared that things got worse because no one wanted to talk to him, and soon after, they stopped inviting him completely.
During the interview, Seth Meyers asked Liu if fans in China approach him now that he is famous. Liu said they actually did, even though he didn’t expect it. He explained that he thought people wouldn’t recognize him because his Marvel movie had never been released in China. So, he assumed nobody would really care. That’s why the attention surprised him.
