Stephen Colbert has had a long-running back-and-forth with the U.S. president, and it’s something his viewers know well. Over time, that relationship has soured over jokes and harsh comebacks.
That long history came up again during a recent public event, when Colbert was asked if he could switch bodies with Donald Trump for one day. And what he replied left us stunned.
Why Stephen Colbert Picked Donald Trump For A One-Day Body Switch
When Colbert was asked whose body he would want to slip into for 24 hours at the 20th anniversary event for Slate’s Political Gabfest, he answered right away and named Donald Trump. Right after that, Colbert admitted the choice was quite predictable. Trump has publicly slammed him many times, so there weren’t any second thoughts.
Because of that history, Colbert made it clear that his answer came from years of comments, reactions, and very public embarrassments between the two. And, Colbert didn’t stop there. After naming Trump, Colbert moved on to explain why he would want the body switch.
What Colbert Said He Would Do If The Switch Happened
Colbert said that if he had control of Trump’s body for one day, he would resign as president. Importantly, Colbert stressed that there would be “no scandal, no confession.” Instead, he said he would step down by praising himself and saying everything had been great. He even described it as a “glorious ending” and said he would simply end it there. However, Colbert didn’t stop with that idea.

Colbert added a darker and funnier thought. He said he suddenly had a scary follow-up question about whether Trump would be taking over his body during those same 24 hours, which instantly made the plan sound like a terrible deal. If you are new to this feud, this might seem a bit weird, but if you know their history, it shouldn’t surprise you.
In July, Colbert announced that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert would end in 2026. The franchise dates back to 1993, when David Letterman was hosting. Colbert took over the show in 2015. Soon after that announcement, Trump reacted online, saying he “absolutely love[d] that Colbert got fired” and claimed the host’s talent was even less than his ratings.
Naturally, Colbert didn’t stay quiet. On his show, he responded by asking whether an untalented man could really create satire. Then, turning to a camera labeled the “eloquence cam,” he shared a blunt message aimed directly at the president: “Go f— yourself.” Given all the history between Colbert and Trump, we are now eagerly waiting for the next feud.
