Taylor Swift Says The Track ‘My Boy Breaks All His Favorite Toys’ Is About Having “Hope For A Toxic, Broken Relationship”
Taylor Swift has explained the meaning of her track ‘My Boy Breaks All His Favorite Toys‘ from her latest album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’. In a breakdown of the song for Amazon Music, the 34-year-old pop sensation peeled the layers of the song lyrics that she has seemingly written for the 1975 lead vocalist and her ex-boyfriend Matty Healy.
Talking about the metaphorical narrative of her relationship with Healy woven into the lyrics of the song, Taylor said it tells the story of her deteriorating relationship. Swift said that the song has been written from the “perspective of a child’s toy, being somebody’s favorite toy until they break you and then don’t want to play with you anymore.”
The pop sensation further asserted that the song’s lyrics are about “a rusted relationship someone is yearning to bring back to its days of being shiny and new.” She also spoke about the common experience of feeling devalued or discarded in relationships, and the emotionally scarring journey that follows.
“A lot of us are in relationships where we are so valued at the beginning, but then we’re suddenly devalued,” she said. She explained that the track is basically about denial while being in love, where the person going through it still clings on to “hope for a toxic, broken relationship.”

Matty Healy Says He Has “Not Really Listened To” Taylor Swift’s Diss Tracks About Him
Soon after the release of Taylor Swift’s album, many of her fans were sure that some of her tracks were based on her short relationship with Matty Healy. Certain songs from the album have references like a black suit that Healy often wears during his performances, his penchant for certain bands, his “golden retriever” personality, and his love for all things poetic.
Based on these, Taylor’s fans concluded that songs like ‘But Daddy I Love Him!’, ‘The Smallest Man That Ever Lived‘, and ‘My Boy Breaks All His Favorite Toys’ are about Matty Healy. While there was heavy speculation about the same across social media, Healy was asked about it when he gave a very passive response.
The singer was asked by paparazzi about how he feels about Taylor Swift’s latest songs. In response, Healy asserted that he has “not really listened to any of them“.
Taylor Swift herself never revealed the inspirations behind her songs, though her keen fans have decoded the lyrics and attributed them to Joe Alwyn, Matty Healy, and even Kim Kardashian. The album also features a song about Taylor’s current boyfriend Travis Kelce.
