Taylor Swift‘s latest album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ has sent social media into a high frenzy as the pop sensation has dropped multiple hints dedicated to her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn. However, it isn’t just Alwyn to whom she has dedicated the album. Many of the songs’ lyrics are also pointed at her past relationship with ‘The 1975′ frontman, Matty Healy.
While Swift doesn’t explicitly name Healy in her songs, fans have pointed out that several tracks on the album seem to allude to their romantic involvement which purportedly occurred in the spring of 2023. In one of her tracks titled ‘Guilty as Sin?‘, Swift sings about conflicted feelings and “fatal fantasies” for someone from her past while being in another relationship. Fans have pointed out that the reference strongly reeks of her relationship with Healy.
Besides, Swift has also made references to Healy’s favorite band, ‘The Blue Nile’ and their song ‘The Downtown Lights’ which fueled the speculation further. Healy has publicly discussed the influence of ‘The Blue Nile‘ on his own music, making it an obvious clue for Swifties to pick on. Similarly, in her track titled ‘The Black Dog’, Swift mentions another one of Healy’s favorite bands ‘The Starting Line’.
The songs that have references to Healy typically explore themes of longing and missed connections, pointing at what may have gone wrong in their relationship. In another song titled ‘Fresh Out the Slammer’, Swift wrote lyrics about moving on from past relationships and looking forward to new beginnings, perhaps hinting at her current relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce.
The song lyrics hint that she was “running back home” to someone, while being “at the starting line” of something new, hinting at the transition from her relationship with Joe Alwyn to that with Matty Healy. The song lyrics also clarify that the subject of her song is not American as she mentions “to the one who says I’m the girl of his American dreams.” Both Alwyn and Healy were British artists.

Furthermore, the album also addresses the criticism that Swift faced during her relationship with Healy, particularly around the controversial comments he made after their break up. Healy and Swift first met in the fall of 2014. The rumors of their relationship started swirling after they attended several ‘1975‘ concerts together and Healy wore a shirt on stage that featured her ‘1989′ album cover.
They went public with their romance in May 2023. The couple broke up within a month, and Swifties were not too happy with the fling as Healy made some controversial comments about the relationship and laughed at them. He later apologized for it on a podcast, but the damage was already done.
In songs like ‘I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)‘ and ‘But Daddy I Love Him‘, Swift hints at her defiance against her own fans as she tries to defend “wild boy” despite public scrutiny. Even the album’s title track, ‘The Tortured Poets Department‘, appears to playfully reference Healy’s penchant for poetic gestures.
