Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch’s Luxury Yacht Sinks Off Sicilian Coast, Him And His Daughter Among Many Missing

We’re all well aware of the Titanic tragedy that killed hundreds and yet managed to become one of the highest selling stories. In another similar accident, a luxury superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week.

The superyatch belonged to British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and the man himself along with his daughter, Hannah, are together listed among the missing persons. Here’s what happened.

According to local officials and others who spoke with PEOPLE, the private yacht, named the Bayesian, drowned amid a fierce storm.

Mike Lynch, the co-founder of Autonomy Corp. and then-head of Invoke Capital Partners, was reportedly on board the 56-meter UK-flagged yacht when it sank near Poritcello around 5 a.m. Monday, August 19.

The Italian Coast Guard has said that 15 people were rescued, with eight taken to shore at local hospitals, while six others remain missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. The search operations are underway.

One of the survivors of the accident is Mike Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, who was also pulled from the debris with others. That was not so for everyone, as the body of a crew member, identified to be the ship’s cook, was found near the sunken vessel.

The sinking of the Bayesian and its 10 crew and 12 passengers on board has gone some way towards redressing the balance in recent days. The 48-year-old businessman planned to retreat from the public eye after winning a recent legal matter.

Lynch was found not guilty in a court in London a few months back after he was accused of lying about how much money his company was making just before the disastrous $11 billion tie-up with Hewlett-Packard.

After the acquittal, Lynch released a statement saying he was eager to return home to his family and his work. However, his survival now remains a miracle people are praying for.
