“The Audacity To Spit Perfectly Good Food”: Internet Slams Selena Gomez’s Beau Benny Blanco For “Disrespectful” Review Of Filipino Food

American record producer Benny Blanco has been a lot more in people’s news feeds since he started dating pop sensation Selena Gomez. The couple has made it amply clear that they are not the kinds that shy away from showing off their love for each other on social media. However, the music producer is now in the spotlight for some problematic reasons — or so the netizens think.

Blanco is facing criticism from Filipino netizens after posting a TikTok video where he expressed disappointment with Jollibee, a popular Filipino fast-food chain. And the backlash is not just limited to him. People are also calling out Selena for her “choices”.

In a video titled “my first time trying Jollibee,” Selena Gomez’s beau Benny Blanco reviewed various Jollibee food items, including adobo rice, fried chicken, and spaghetti. His comments were clearly negative, coupled with actions that angered viewers.

Blanco mentioned in the video that he grew up eating Filipino food due to his stepmother being from the Philippines. But he described the adobo rice from the brand as “dry ass” and tasting “like butt.”

He also criticized the Chickenjoy — Jollibee’s signature fried chicken. “Chicken’s not even that good. Gravy is fire, [but the] chicken is actually kinda soggy as f*ck,” Blanco said in the video.

The 35-year-old was not impressed by the spaghetti either, as he made gagging sounds and commented, “This sh*t smells like f*cking vomit“. He also spit the food out and eneded his review by saying, “Don’t go to Jollibee. This sh*t sucks.”

The video received over 5 million views, with many viewers enraged at Blanco’s disrespectful remarks about Filipino food. Some criticized him for spitting out perfectly good food, while some others demanded that he respect diverse food preferences.

It’s okay if Jollibee isn’t your thing, but there’s no need for disrespectful comments. Everyone has different tastes and preferences,” a social media user wrote. “That’s crazy, I’m actually speechless. The disrespect is insane,” another commented.

The audacity to spit perfectly good food while many don’t have any on their table,” a third one added.

Beyond food criticism, some viewers also brought in Benny Blanco’s romantic relationship with Selena Gomez. Many questioned what Gomez sees in him, while some users questioned their compatibility.

Okay I don’t get it selena,” one user wrote. “Benny, your literal review about Jollibee is my literal review of you,” a top comment read. “Selena… I got questions..,” another wrote.

In response to the backlash, Blanco uploaded another Filipino food review video on the same day with a more positive perspective on Filipino dishes. In this video, he tried “the highest rated” Filipino dishes in Los Angeles, including pancit, lumpia, longganisa, and the Jollibee chicken sandwich.

He even danced around as he praised the chicken sandwich, asserting that he has reversed his opinion. Some viewers perceived the positive second review as sarcasm or an attempt at damage control.

He knew he needed to redeem himself lol,” a user wrote in the comments section. “We all know he’s being sarcastic,” another one said. “The damage has been done,” another added.
