Ian McKellen played the role of Wizard Gandalf in ‘The Lord Of The Rings‘, based on the epic fantasy novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien, later fitted as a trilogy. The actor has done various roles from serious Shakespearean modern dramas to modern theatres to popular action movies.
Moreover, for the first installment of the ‘LOTR‘ movie, Ian also received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role Gandalf. He later reprised the role for the third installment. It seems that the actor is ready to reprise the role again as he has reportedly been approached by the makers for the same. Here’s what’s brewing.
Ian McKellen Could Return For The Role Of Gandalf
It seems that Sir Ian McKellen is ready to reprise his role of Gandalf yet again. The 85-year-old actor is recovering from his injury after falling off the stage, but was approached by the maker of ‘The Lord Of The Rings’.
He told The Big Issue that the makers want him to step into his iconic role. “Enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating … I can’t tell you any more than that. I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him,” he said.
He added with an uncertainty: “When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So, they better be quick.”

In a separate interview with BBC Breakfast, McKellen shared that he has no plans on retiring from acting anytime soon. He said, “I shall just keep at it as long as the legs and the lungs and the mind keep working,” while promoting his new film ‘The Critic’.
Ian McKellen Says He’s Physically Healed But Can’t Say The Same About His Mental State
Ian McKellen shared during an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today Show that he lost his footing while slipping off the stage during ‘Player Kings’. He has recovered from the injury but can’t say the same about his mental state because of how it affected him.
“It’s emotionally that I’ve got some residue that I’ve got to deal with,” the actor said. “I said to myself as I tripped and slid off the stage, ‘This is the end’. These were the words in my mind, ‘This is the end. ‘And apparently I shouted out, ‘My neck is broken, I’m dying.’ I don’t remember saying that, so there was a lot going on in my head as the body responded to the fall.”

Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that Andy Serkis will direct the new ‘LOTR’ film titled ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum‘. The first movie is slated to release in 2026 — and Ian McKellen returning for the role would be a game changer for Serkis.
