Tim Burton is renowned for his fantasy and animation films with masterpieces like ‘Corpse Bride’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’. However, the filmmaker had a harrowing experience working with Disney for 2019’s ‘Dumbo’.
In a recent interview, Burton revealed that he had considered retiring after making ‘Dumbo’, but he found his creative streak re-ignited while working on the Netflix show ‘Wednesday‘, of which he directed four of the eight episodes. He said that after the pandemic, ‘Wednesday’ was just the project to “reenergize” him. Here’s all he said about his experience with the Netflix show.
‘Wednesday’ Reconnected Tim Burton To “Making Things” After Disney’s ‘Dumbo’
In a recent interview with Variety, Tim Burton opened up about how working on ‘Wednesday‘ helped him get over the challenging times of the pandemic. “It felt like there was a change around the time of COVID where everything was just in flux. And so, rather than get caught up in that, I just worked on my own feelings and things,” he said.
After ‘Dumbo’, Burton was considering to retire. “Then ‘Wednesday’ came along. That reconnected me to making things,” he said. Burton explained that Netflix’s production boosted him to be creative again.
“We went off to Romania and it felt like it was a creative health camp. It went so well,” he said. “Honestly, after ‘Dumbo’, I really didn’t know. I thought that could have been it. I could have retired, or become… well, I wouldn’t have become an animator again,” Burton said, adding, “But this [‘Wednesday’] did reenergize me.”

Tim Burton Opens Up About His Upcoming Film ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ is Burton’s first release in five years after Disney’s ‘Dumbo’. The filmmaker has reunited with Michael Keaton, with whom he worked on the 1989 ‘Batman’ and several other productions.
Burton talked about his experience working on the sequel to his old film. “First of all, I had no idea to do a sequel — again, this is before the time when those things were talked about,” he said.
He also revisited working with old co-workers Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder, “it was just very strange but beautiful,” he said. The filmmaker further revealed his confusion.
“I didn’t watch the original again, mostly because I never knew why it was successful to begin with.” He added, “Just dive in and do it quickly — like we did in the past.”
