In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell revealed that his bank account was nearly empty before the blockbuster hit cinemas and he finally got paid. “I’d never made any significant amount of money on a movie, including ‘Top Gun,’ and I was depleting a bank account to a point where my accountant was like, ‘This pandemic cannot last much longer,'” Powell recalled thinking during the interview.
When the pandemic seemed to have no end in sight, the production had decided to release the film on a streaming service. But Tom Cruise, the film’s lead star and major box office draw, insisted on a theatrical release. “Tom was already Tom; I was waiting for my life to change,” Powell said, noting how the pandemic did not affect a superstar like Cruise even though it did affect him, a star yet to make it big at the time.
