According to The New York Times, on Friday an attacker reached the stage of Chautauqua Institution in Western New York. Rushdie was scheduled to talk about the United States as a safe haven for exiled writers.

The attacker stabbed the writer in the neck and the abdomen, as per the police and witnesses. He continued to attack even after several people held him back.

Salman was rushed to a nearby hospital via helicopter. He was in surgery for several hours on Friday afternoon. The writer’s agent Andrew Wylie told The New York Times that Rushdie was on a ventilator and was unable to speak.

The news is not good,” Wylie said. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”

The chances of his survival are somewhat slim considering the severity of the damage and his age. All we can hope is that the talented writer comes out of the hospital fully recovered.

The attack shocked everyone across the globe. People are keen to know who and why he was attacked.

Major Eugene J. Staniszewski of the New York State Police has identified the suspect in the attack as Hadi Matar. The 24-year-old man is a resident of New Jersey and he was arrested on the stage.

But the officials have said that they have yet to find a motive for the stabbing. Hadi has been taken into custody and charges will be put on him depending on Rushdie’s condition.

Hadi had a pass to attend the event and his last official address was in Fairview, which is across the Hudson River from Manhattan. His Facebook account, which has now been taken down, had the photo of Ayatollah Khomeini. He was the Irani leader who issued a fatwa against Salman Rushdie in 1989 after the publication of ‘The Satanic Verses’.
