The talented musician Taylor Swift has spent the previous two years releasing new music, causing emotional upheaval as she also released surprise lockdown albums and re-records of her creations. Not to mention that she recently released a brand-new album, ‘Midnights‘, along with a deluxe edition, also titled Midnights (3 am Edition).
Taylor has a lengthy diss track history. The songs ‘All Too Well’ for Jake Gyllenhal, ‘Mr. Perfectly Fine‘ for Joe Jonas, and ‘Dear John‘ for John Mayer are a few examples. Now adding to the list is a brand-new song by Taylor called ‘Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve‘ from her most recent album. It’s rumored to be about John Mayer. So, what specifically caused these two musicians to break up?

When Did Taylor Swift And John Mayer Start Dating?
With the then-32-year-old John Mayer tweeted about the then-19-year-old Taylor Swift, the two started to flirt in March 2009. When Taylor’s Fearless tour landed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in May 2009, John came out to perform with her. The couple then played it together at New York’s Jingle Ball in December 2009, where the two had real onstage chemistry. They sang her song ‘White Horse’ and his classic hit, ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland.‘
According to reports, the couple dated from November 2009 to February 2010. And if a song Taylor composed after their breakup is any indication, it was not a friendly breakup.
Why Did Taylor And John Break Up?
Taylor hinted strongly that she had been much in love with a man named John in the song ‘Dear John‘ from her ‘Speak Now’ album, which was released in October 2010. She indicated that he had played some severe games with her heart. She also gave the impression that she had been advised against getting close to him.
John felt certain that the song was a clear jab at him even though Taylor at the time would not acknowledge it was about John. He admitted to feeling “very humiliated” by Taylor’s song to Rolling Stone in 2012. He told them, “It made me feel terrible because I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”
He further said, “I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?”
Parts of Swift’s song goes – “Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong, Don’t you think nineteen is too young, To be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so? I should’ve known, Well maybe it’s me and my blind optimism to blame, Maybe it’s you and your sick need to give love then take it away, And you’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who don’t understand, And I’ll look back and regret how I ignored when they said ‘run as fast as you can.’”

What Are They Up To Now?
Swifties have been waiting for Taylor to release Speak Now (TV) as they are sure that there will be more of their story in the vault tracks. As of now, Taylor has released a track called ‘Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve‘ from the ‘Midnights‘ album. Going by the lyrics, the song is probably about John Mayer.
“Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first,” Taylor sings on the track. “And I damn sure would’ve never danced with the devil / At 19, and the God’s honest truth is that the pain was heaven/ And now that I’m grown, I’m scared of ghosts.”
Fans are piecing the pieces together and drawing their own conclusions despite the singer not confirming anything. They think the song is about John and that its position as the 19th song on the playlist refers to her age at the time of their relationship.
Taylor Swift putting a John Mayer song at #19 – the age she was when he dated her – in the tracklist on the album she released at 32 – the age he was when he dated her – is exactly the kind of long term petty I love.
